Process Dynamics and Control - CH4043

Assignment 1
Question 1
Acidic waste water is generated by a palm oil processing plant. Acidity of waste water ( )
depends on quality of in-feed fresh oil palm fruits. Quality of in-feed fresh oil palm fruits is
unpredictable and that is varied with many external uncertainties. Amount of waste water
generation of the plant is also varied with supply of fresh oil palm fruits. Waste water should be
neutralized (pH=7), before enter to the waste water treatment system.
Automated continuous type neutralizing tank is used for pH controlling. Schematic of the pH
control mechanism is shown in Figure 1. In this automated system, feedback PI control
mechanism is used to control the pH value by controlling Sodium hydroxide (NaOH) in-feed
mass flow rate ( ) to the neutralizing tank. Control valve dynamics are negligible by
comparing with system kinetics.
