Control of DC Motor Using Pulse Width Modulation: Speed

This document discusses using pulse width modulation (PWM) to control the speed of a DC motor. It begins with an abstract that outlines using a digital closed loop control system and PWM technique interfaced with a microcontroller to control motor speed. It then provides introductions to PWM, different types of waves used in PWM, and classifications of DC motors. The remainder of the document details the components, architecture, and block diagrams involved in the PWM speed control system for DC motors. It concludes with advantages of using PWM for motor control including less power consumption and finer control, and disadvantages such as potential shortening of motor life.

ABSTRACT
The

project reveals the digital closed loop

control system for speed control of DC motor
using PWM technique. In present days the
power semiconductor devices have completely
revolutionized the control of drives especially
in the area of control usage of thyristors igbts
power MOsFET etc., was increased
The digital circuit can be interfaced to
microcontroller. So that the speed can be
controlled by Microcontroller there by making
speed control of DC motor even more easily.
Pwm technique to the digital circuit drives the
component correspondingly speed will change.

Introduction Of PWM
Pulse - an electromagnetic wave

modulation thereof of brief
duration
Width Modulation - to adjust to
or keep in
proper measure or proportion the
width of
the pulse with respect to the
frequency of the
wave

CIRCUIT OVERVIEW

Speed control of dc motor with

PWM
Advantage:
The motor consumes less power
Significantly less energy loss due
to heat
Allows finer motor control
Disadvantages:
Shortens the life of the motor by
putting
more stress on the fan bearings
and windings
