Heat Trandfer Project Proposal

The document proposes a semester project to design, fabricate, and analyze a concentric tube heat exchanger for hot water recovery. Student groups will build a heat exchanger device and compare experimental and theoretical results. The project will use a mild steel inner tube and PVC outer tube with hot and cold water tanks. Learning objectives include understanding how heat exchangers save energy, evaluating suitable materials for heat transfer, and assessing the efficiency of the designed heat exchanger. Potential applications of this type of heat exchanger include heat recovery, oil cooling, and utilizing wasted hot water heat in winter.

SEMESTER PROJECT PROPOSAL

1. Problem Statement
Design, Fabrication and Analysis of Heat Transfer in concentric tube heat exchanger being
used for hot water recovery.

2. Overview
Student groups are given a semester project to fabricate a device working on heat transfer
principles and compare and analyze the experimental and theoretical results.

3. Idea
Saving energy is a huge and costly problem in industries and its one reason we often install devices
called heat exchangers to salvage as much heat as possible from waste gases, water etc. Heat
exchangers have lots of other familiar uses too. Engines in cars, ships, and planes use heat exchangers
to work more efficiently, and if you have a refrigerator or an air-conditioner in your home, those are
using heat exchangers too. So what exactly are heat exchangers and how do they work? Let's take a
closer look as we are going to design a heat exchanger and in this way we can understand its

working more precisely.

4. Design and Fabrication

The schematic diagram of project is shown in figure 1 while the proposed model is shown in the
figure 2. It has following main components:
a.
b.
c.
d.

Hot water Internal tube made up of Mild Steel.

Cold water External tube made up of PVC plastic.
Hot and cold water tanks made up of Mild Steel.
Coupling for sealing internal and external tubes.

5. Learning Objectives
After this project we should be able to:

Learn and see that how much energy we can save using this heat exchanger which is the basic
purpose of our project as at the end we should be able to save maximum energy.

Learn how different materials e.g copper, mild steel etc should be used for better heat transfer
since we are designing on a small scale.

Learn how efficiently our heat exchanger works so that they can be designed on a large scale for
industrial usage.

6. Applications
Concentric tube heat exchanger is a low cost, which increases reliability by restricting mixing of
fluids exchanging heat. Concentric tube heat exchanger has potential application such as

Heat recovery from engine cooling circuit

Oil cooling
DE superheating in refrigeration and air conditioning
Utilization of heat from hot water being wasted during winter season which is also our major
focus while designing this heat exchanger.
