3.5 A Borehole Log From 8.5 M To 20.5m Is Shown in Figure P3.5. (A) Determine The N Values at The Depths at Which

The document describes a borehole log showing soil properties from 8.5 to 20.5 meters depth. It asks the reader to: (1) determine Standard Penetration Test (SPT) N values at test depths; (2) plot a graph of N values versus depth; (3) delineate soil compactness with depth; (4) estimate unit weights for different soil zones based on compactness; and (5) calculate N1,60 values for each zone. A figure shows the borehole log results. The solution notes that SPT analysis does not apply to a clay layer from 11-14 meters depth.

3.5 A borehole log from 8.5 m to 20.5m is shown in Figure P3.5.

(a) Determine the N values at the depths at which

SPT were conducted. (b) Make a plot N values versus depth. (c) Delineate and estimate the degree of compactness
of the soils with depth. (d) Based on the degree of compactness in (c), estimate the unit weights for each soil zone (a
zone is a soil with a given degree of compactness; for example if a soil between depth A and depth B is
characterized as loose, you can describe this as a zone) (e) Calculate N1,60 for each zone. Note that R denotes
refusal.

Solution 3.5

The above are rough estimates. The borehole log reports clay from about 11 m to 14 m. SPT
data analysis is not applicable for clays.

3.6 The cone resistance (tip resistance) for a CPT test conducted on an alluvial deposit of soil is shown in Figure
P3.6. (a) Draw the composite cone resistance with depth. (b) How many soil zones or layers have you
identified?

Solution 3.6
(a) See figure below

Zone 2

Zone 3

Zone 4
Zone 5
