Persuasive Writing - Counter Argument
Persuasive Writing - Counter Argument
Subject: ELA
Instructional Objective: The learner will (TLW) understand how a counter argument is used in persuasive
writing and will be able to write a counter argument paragraph to support their individual persuasive letters.
Teks:
(5.19) Writing/Persuasive Texts. Students write persuasive texts to influence the attitudes or actions of a specific
audience on specific issues. Students are expected to write persuasive essays for appropriate audiences that
establish a position and include sound reasoning, detailed and relevant evidence, and consideration of
alternatives.
Materials:
Opening/Hook: I will begin by showing the students a silly counter argument photograph and ask the
students what they think a counter argument is. I will lead students to the answer then ask them why it is
important to include a counter argument in their persuasive writing (to make our own argument stronger).
Input/Information Giving/Modeling: I will read the counter argument paragraph in the example persuasive
piece we have been studying. We will discuss the components of the paragraph (appropriate sentence starter,
counter point, transition and response to counter point).
Check for Understanding/Guided Practice: I will give each group a task card with a persuasive argument
and three supporting reasons for the argument. Students will be tasked to study the argument, come up with a
counter argument and a response to the counter argument. Each person in the group will be given a job to
ensure everyone participates. After students prepare their counter arguments and responses, groups will share
with the class.
Independent Practice: Students will be given the remainder of the class period to work on the counter
argument paragraph in their individual persuasive letters.
Closure: For closure, I will ask a few students to read their counter argument paragraph aloud to the rest of the
class.
Evaluation: The counter argument paragraph will be evaluated as part of the rubric for the students persuasive
letters.
Accommodations:
- Students will work in small groups during guided practice.
- For independent practice, specified students will work one on one with the teacher to ensure
understanding of counter arguments and together they will formulate an appropriate counter argument
for their own writing.
