MTTR & MTBF Calculation in SAP PM

This document discusses key performance indicators for plant maintenance - Mean Time To Repair (MTTR) and Mean Time Between Repairs (MTBR). MTTR is calculated by dividing the total downtime by the number of breakdowns. MTBR is calculated by dividing the total uptime by the number of breakdowns. The document provides an example calculation of MTTR and MTBR for maintenance data from three equipment breakdowns and compares the results to reports from SAP.

SAP Plant Maintenance Technical Object Failure Analysis

Overview
1. MTTR Mean Time To Repair
The mean time in hours of a machine breakdown.
This key figure is calculated by dividing the number of effective breakdowns by the effective time of the
nth breakdown:

1 n
MTTR (hr ) [ ME(n) MS (n)]
n 1
2. MTBR Mean Time Between Repairs
Mean time in hours between two machine breakdowns.
This key figure is calculated by dividing the number of effective breakdowns by the time between the
end of the last breakdown and the beginning of the next breakdown:

MTBR(hr )

1 n
[ MS (n) ME (n 1)]
n 1

Note:

MS(0)

Start-up Date of Equipment (Maintained in equipment master data)

MS (n)

Malfunction Start (Date)

Start Malfunction (Time)

ME (n)

Malfunction End (Date)

Malfunction End (Time)

Example
Start-up Date from equipment master data.

MS(0) = 01.10.2011 00:00:00

Malfunction Data from Notification (See Figure 1.1)

MS(1) = 03.10.2011 08:00:00

ME(1) = 03.10.2011 12:00:00
MS(2) = 07.10.2011 10:00:00
ME(2) = 07.10.2011 12:00:00
MS(3) = 15.11.2011 10:00:00
ME(3) = 15.11.2011 16:00:00
n=3
Calculation:
Using MTTR Formula for above data:

1
MTTR [(ME (1) MS (1)) ( ME (2) MS (2)) ( ME (3) MS (3))]
3
1
MTTR [(4 2 6)] 4 hr
3
Using MTBR Formula for above data:

1
MTBR [(MS (3) ME (2)) ( MS (2) ME (1)) ( MS (1) ME (0))]
3
1
MTBR [934 94 56] 361.33 hr
3
Compare the results with SAP reports shown in figure 1.2 and 1.3 highlighted in red boxes.
Similarly same calculation can also be done month wise as shown in figure 1.2 and 1.3 highlighted in green
boxes.
