HOMEWORK (Dynamics of Circular Motion and Gravitation) due on the scheduled Quiz 4
Solve the following problems with illustration showing complete and easy to follow solution. Use 1 bond paper
per problem. You could have the problems printed on your answer sheets. Indicate the number of problems
solve on the 1st page and provide a summary of answer/s on the lower right side of every problem. Note: ONLY
PROPERLY ACCOMLISHED WORK WILL GET FULL CREDIT)
1. A satellite is placed in a circular orbit to observe the surface of Mars from an altitude of 144 km. The
equatorial radius of Mars is 3397 km. If the speed of the satellite is 3480 m/s,
a) What is the magnitude of the centripetal acceleration of the satellite? (ans: 3.42 m/s2)
b) What is the frequency of the satellites motion?
2. A satellite in orbit around the earth has a period of one hour. An identical satellite is placed in an orbit
having a radius that is nine times larger than that of the first satellite. What is the period of the second
satellite? (ans: 27 h)
3. A 25-kg box is sliding down an ice-covered hill. When it reaches point A, the box is moving at 11
m/s. Point A is at the bottom of a circular arc that has a radius R = 7.5 m. What is the magnitude
the normal force on the box at Point A? (ans: 650 N)

4. A 1800-kg Jeep travels along a straight 500-m

portion of highway (from A to B) at a constant
speed of 10 m/s. At B, the Jeep encounters an
unbanked curve of radius 50 m. The Jeep follows
the road from B to C traveling at a constant speed
of 10 m/s while the direction of the Jeep changes
from east to south.
a) What is the magnitude of the acceleration of the
Jeep as it travels from A to B?
b) What is the magnitude of the acceleration of the
Jeep as it travels from B to C? (ans: 2 m/s2)
c) What is the magnitude of the frictional force between the tires and the road as the Jeep negotiates the curve
from B to C? (ans: 3600 N)
d) If the curve is to be banked without depending on friction, what must be ideal angle of banking?

5. The 4-kg in the figure is attached to a vertical rod by means of two

strings. When the system rotates about the axis of the rod, the strings
are extended as shown and the tension in the upper string is 80 N.
a) What is the tension in the lower cord?
b) b) How many revolutions per minute does the system make?
