P & S Assignment

This document provides 12 probability and statistics problems for students to answer and submit by February 29, 2016. The problems cover a range of topics including: calculating probabilities of events occurring with dice, randomly selected digits, and births of children by gender; determining probabilities of independent events occurring; calculating probabilities using binomial and normal distributions; finding means, variances, and standard deviations of populations and samples; constructing confidence intervals; and determining maximum sampling errors. Students are asked to solve all 12 problems and submit their answers by the given deadline.

ASSIGNMENT-I: PROBABILITY AND STATISTICS

For B.Tech II year II sem (IT AND CE)-2015-16

NOTE: Answer all the questions. Submit on or before 29/02/2016
1) A pair of dice is thrown. Find the probability that at least one of the two numbers is
greater than 4.
2) The two digits are selected at random from the digits 1 through 9. If the sum of the two digit s is even,
find the probability that both the numbers are odd.
3) If the probability of a child being male is 0.55, what is the probability of having three daughters in
succession?
4) Three persons work independently at solving a given design problem. The respective probabilities that
they solve it are , 1/3 and . What is the probability that (a) none will solve the problem (b) all will
solve the problem (c) the problem is will be solved.
5) 20% of items produced from a factory are defective. Find the probability that in a random sample of
5 (i) none is defective (ii) one is defective and P(1<x<4).
6) If 2% of the light bulbs are defective, find the probability of (i) no defective (ii) exactly one
defective (iii) at least one defective (iv) at most one defective in a random sample of 100 light bulbs.
7) For a normally distributed variate X with mean 35 and standard deviation 6, find the probability that
(i) X lies between 30 and 45 (ii) X larger than 40.
8) A population consists of 4 numbers 2, 3, 6 and 8. Find (a) mean (b) variance of the population (c)
draw all possible samples of size 2 of (i) without (ii) with replacement.
(d) Find the mean of sampling distribution of means in (i) and (ii)
sampling distribution of means in (i) and (ii).

(e) find the standard error of

9) A random sample of size 36 is drawn from a population of 1500 units with population mean and
variance are 22.4 and 0.5 respectively. Determine the expected number of random
10) A random sample of 200 measurements from a large population on gave a mean value of 50 and
standard deviation of 9. Find the 95% confidence interval for the mean of the population.
11) Let 15, 17,10,18,16,9,7,11,13 and 14 be a random sample from a normal population whose mean and
variance are unknown. Find the 99% confidence interval for the mean of the population.
12) A random sample of 500 apples was taken and out of which 60 were found to be bad. Find the
maximum error with 95% confidence.
