NM 4 SB 238

Natalie solves a multiplication problem using arrays to make it easier. She breaks down the 8 x 12 array into two smaller arrays: an 8 x 10 array and an 8 x 2 array. She multiplies the smaller arrays and adds their products to find the total. The document provides examples of breaking down other arrays, like 7 x 14, into smaller component arrays to simplify multiplication. It encourages reflecting on how using arrays helps with multiplication and provides practice problems to solidify the concept.

multiplication.

? How many squares are on Natalies game?

Natalies Solution
There are 8 rows of squares in my game. There
are 12 columns of squares. I can multiply 8 12
to find how many squares there are altogether.
First, I estimate that 12 is about 10.
8 10 80. There are more than 80 squares.
I can model the game on grid paper.
I noticed there are 2 arrays inside the 8 12 array.
I colour the 8 10 array red. I colour the
8 2 array blue. I find the products for the
2 smaller arrays and add them together.
A. Use 8 10 8 2 to find 8 12.

8 x 12 =
8 x 10

8x2

8 x 12 = 8 x 10 + 8 x 2

The array can also be broken into other smaller arrays.

B. Draw an 8 12 array on grid paper.
Starting in the 1st column, colour in an 8 8 array.
Then colour in an 8 4 array.
C. Write 8 12 as the sum of 2 products to represent

what you coloured.

D. Draw another 8 12 array on grid paper.

Find and colour 2 arrays inside it.

Use different arrays than in parts A and B.
Write 8 12 as the sum of 2 products to
represent what you coloured.

Reflecting
1. a) How does using smaller arrays help you

to multiply?
b) Which arrays were easier to multiply? Why?
2. Describe the pattern in the multiplication

sentences from parts A, C, and D.

Checking
3. A game has 7 rows and 14 columns.
a) Estimate the number of squares on the game.
b) Draw the array on grid paper. Find and colour

smaller arrays that have easier numbers to multiply.

c) Write 7 14 as the sum of 2 products to
represent what you coloured.

Practising
4. A tree planter has planted 7 rows of 18 trees.

How many trees did he plant?

Solve using arrays.
