Every child counts

UNICEF is a leading humanitarian and development agency working globally for the
rights of every child. Child rights begin with safe shelter, nutrition, protection from
disaster and conflict and traverse the life cycle: pre-natal care for healthy births, clean
water and sanitation, health care and education.
UNICEF was established on 11 December 1946 by the United Nations to meet the
emergency needs of children in post-war Europe and China. Its full name was the
United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund. In 1950, its mandate was
broadened to address the long-term needs of children and women in developing
countries everywhere. UNICEF became a permanent part of the United Nations system
in 1953, when its name was shortened to the United Nations Children's Fund. However,
UNICEF retained its original acronym.
UNICEF has spent nearly 70 years working to improve the lives of children and their
families. Working with and for children through adolescence and into adulthood
requires a global presence whose goal is to produce results and monitor their effects.
UNICEF also lobbies and partners with leaders, thinkers and policy makers to help all
children realize their rightsespecially the most disadvantaged.
UNICEF has more than 200 ambassadors worldwide. They
are recognized figures at national and international level
that are committed to support the work for the rights of
children and adolescents.
They are personalities from the arts, sport and
entertainment, whose popularity is helping to mobilize and
engage the society to create opportunities for all children
and adolescents to develop their capacities.
