Section 4.5: Integration by Substitution: Pattern Recognitio

This document discusses techniques for integrating composite functions including: 1) The chain rule for finding derivatives of composite functions and its application to finding antiderivatives. 2) Dividing and multiplying constants under the integral sign when the integrand contains a variable part but not a constant. 3) U-substitution for change of variables when substituting u=g(x) and computing du=g'(x)dx. 4) The general power rule for integration that is often used with u-substitutions when quantities in the integrand are raised to powers. 5) Change of variable formulas for definite integrals when making a substitution of the form u=g(x). 6) Properties for integrating

Change of Variables
u-substition:
u=g(x) du=g'(x)
Steps:
-Choose u (inner part of composite function)
-Find du=g'(x)dx
-Rewrite integral in terms of u&du then integrate
-Substitute g(x) back in for u
