Tutorial

The document contains two tutorials related to hydrology. Tutorial 1 describes the hydrologic cycle and water budget, and defines catchment area, residence time, and catchment leakage. It also presents a water budget equation and calculation for a lake based on water elevation, inflows, outflows, rainfall, and evaporation. Tutorial 2 defines evaporation and various related terms. It presents methods to measure evaporation and evapotranspiration. It also provides a sample calculation of potential evapotranspiration for a location over several months based on temperature and daylight hours.

Tutorial-1

Subject Code: CE-3201

1) Describe the hydrologic cycle.
2) Discuss the hydrological water budget.
3) Define:
(i) Catchment area
(ii) Residence time
(iii) Catchment leakage
4) A lake had a water surface elevation of 100.5 m above datum at the beginning of a certain month.
In that month the lake received an average inflow of 6.0 m3/ from the surface runoff sources. In the
same period the outflow from the lake had an average value of 6.5m3/s. Further, in that month, the
lake received a rainfall of 145mm and the evaporation from the lake surface was estimated as
6.10cm. Write the water budget equation for the lake and calculate the water surface elevation of
the lake at the end of month. The average lake surface area can be taken as 5000ha. Assume that
there is no contribution to or from the ground water storage.
5) The plan area of a reservoir is 1km2. The water level in the reservoir is observed to decline by
20cm in a certain period. During this period, the reservoir receives a surface inflow of 10ha-m and 20
ha-m are abstracted from the reservoir for irrigation and power. The pan evaporation and rainfall
recorded during the same period at a nearby meteorological station are 12cm and 3cm respectively.
The calibrated pan factor is 0.7. the seepage loss from the reservoir during this period in ha-m is?

Tutorial-2

1) Define evaporation. Explain various factors on which it is dependent and how can it be reduced.
2) Write different methods of evaporation measurement. Elaborate 3 analytical methods of
evaporation measurement.
3) Define:
(i) Evapotranspiration
(ii) Consumptive use
(iii) PET
(iv) AET
(v) Field capacity and permanent wilting point
4) How AET and PET are measured? Explain.
5) Estimate PET of an area for the season nov-feb in which wheat is grown. The area is in north India
