Heuristic Evaluation Worksheet

The document provides instructions for conducting a heuristic evaluation of a prototype version 1.0 using wireframes. Participants are asked to apply 10 usability heuristics to evaluate specific screens associated with their user goals, noting any heuristics that are violated and the severity of each violation in a provided table. They will have 30 minutes to complete the evaluation by focusing on their assigned user activity and swapping observer/tester roles with another group.

EXERCISE 2: HEURISTIC

EVALUATION

30 minutes

Test your prototype version 1.0 (wireframes) by applying usability

heuristics.
- Swap positions again: The person that acted as the observer will
be a test user in the other group
Structure the evaluation with the user goals (e.g. Jamie wants to
find out if this plant is edible).
Keep in mind your goal in interacting with the prototype (i.e.
dont evaluate everything to do with the prototype, evaluate
those screens associated with your activity).
Note which principles (heuristics) are upheld and which are
violated. Record your evaluation in the Heuristic Evaluation
Table. For each violation, record a severity rating.

USABILITY PRINCIPLES
(HEURISTICS)
1. The visibility of system status
2. The match between system and the real world
3. User control and freedom
4. Consistency and standards
5. Error prevention
6. Recognition rather than recall
7. Flexibility and efficiency of use
8. Aesthetic and minimalist design
9. Help users recognize, diagnose, and recover from errors
10. Help and documentation
