Tutorial Sheet-2 Ugc

This document is a tutorial sheet for a Mechanical Engineering class on Metal Cutting & Metrology. It provides 5 practice problems for students to learn about forces acting on cutting tools during machining operations like turning and orthogonal cutting. The problems cover calculating cutting forces, thrust forces, normal forces on tools, and shear forces on shear planes given data like rake angles, undeformed chip thicknesses, widths of cuts, shear stresses, and coefficients of friction. Solving the problems will help students understand mechanics of metal cutting using theories like Merchant's.

Tutorial sheet no:2

Name of faculty: Anmol Bhatia
Semester: 3rd

Learning objectives:
Students will learn about the effects of forces acting on the tool.
1. In the turning operation, the following data is given:
Rake angle=10 degree, undeformed chip thickness=0.51 mm, width of the cut=3 mm, shear stress on
shear plane=285 N/mm2 & the coefficient of friction=0.65. Determine:
a) Cutting force b) Normal force on the tool c) Shear fore on Shear plane.
2. During orthogonal machining with HSS tool, rake angle=5 degrees, undeformed chip
thickness=0.25 mm.width of the cut=4 mm, shear stress on the material=350 N/mm2 & the
coefficient of friction=0.5. Determine the tangential cutting force & the thrust force.
3. If the rake angle of the tool=10 degrees, cutting ratio=0.35,undeformed chip thickness=0.51
mm,width of the cut=3 mm & the shear stress on shear plane=28 N/mm2 & coefficient of
friction=0.65 Determine
a. Cutting force
b. Thrust force
c. Normal force on the tool
d. Shear force on shear plane
4. A cylinder is turned on lathe, with orthogonal machining principle, Axial feed rate=0.25 mm/rev,
rake angle=10 degree & shear angle=27.75 degrees. Find the thickness of the chip produced & the
coefficient of friction using Ernest & merchant theory.
5. M.S. is being machined at a cutting speed of 200m/min,if the undeformed chip thickness=0.2 mm
,rake angle=10 degree, width of the cut=2 mm, coefficient of friction=0.5 & shear strength of the
work material=400 N/mm2.Determine
a. Shear angle
b. Cutting & thrust components of machining forces, using Ernest & Merchants theory.
