Application of Flow Visualization

Flow visualization is the art of making invisible fluid flow patterns visible using special experimental or computational methods, as fluids like air and water are normally transparent. Historically, ink was spilled in water but now computational simulations generate huge data on flows in engineering applications like car air conditioning systems. Flow visualization is applied to develop vehicles, machines, and infrastructure by visualizing gaseous, liquid and blood flows to improve designs in fields like engineering, chemistry and medicine.

Flow visualization

Flow visualization is the art of making flow patterns visible. Most

fluids (air, water, etc.) are transparent, thus their flow patterns are
invisible to us without some special methods to make them visible.

Historically, such methods included experimental methods, like say

spilling ink into water. With the importance of computer models in
all kinds of engineering growing and huge amounts of data collected
from simulating flow processes (e.g. the distribution of airconditioned air in a new car), purely computational methods have
been developed

Application of flow visualization

1-

development of cars, aircraft, spacecraft

design of machines -turbines, combustion engines

2-

Gaseous flow:
Liquid Flow:

naval applications ship design

civil engineering -harbor design, coastal protection

3Chemistry:
- fluid flow in reactor tanks
4Medicine:
- blood vessels, SPECT, FMRI
Flow visualization study to improve
hemocompatibility of a centrifugal blood pump.
