Geography Lesson

This lesson plan teaches 1st grade students about different landforms, specifically rivers and lakes. Students will use iPads to draw, write, and explore pictures of rivers and lakes. Students who might have a tough time drawing or typing on the iPad can use
a white board or plain paper to get their ideas down.
Planned Assessment Tools
Assessment of learning target product: definition and illustration of landform
Criterion 2/2 for lakes, 2/2 for rivers (total 4/4)
Next steps for students showing mastery students will continue with landforms
and move on to oceans in the next lesson.
Next steps for students that are progressing students will continue working
with and reviewing prior landforms discussed (mountains, rivers and lakes).

Content Summary:
Students will learn about landforms, specifically rivers and lakes in this lesson. They
will use their iPads to write, draw and explore pictures of rivers and lakes. Students
will define and discuss different features of landforms using their specific
characteristics. Students will also use pictures text features to locate key facts in the
text.
Set Induction/Introduction of Lesson and Learning Target (connect to past and
introduce current; this should be motivating and engaging!! You must state this
learning target at the beginning of the lesson):
Today we are going to
Open nearpod with iPads and pass back flipbooks

Review what we did yesterday in our landform flipbook, and with near
pod.

Body:

Landforms, Lake, River, (headings, subheadings, caption, ect.)
Organization, Questions, Transitions, Scaffolding, etc.
Reminder of learning target
We are going to be talk about rivers and lakes today. First lets focus on
rivers.
o Draw a picture nearpod
o Show pictures from students who give approval.
o Talk about the characteristics that everyone included in their picture.
o What other characteristics to rivers have?
o Talk about book pages (6 and 7 & 20,21) about the river how it starts,
pictures of what they look like
o Write a class definition of what a river is
o Check it with nearpod definition.
o Write and draw in flipbook River
Repeat all of these same actions for Lakes
o Book pages 24 & 25

Allow time for sharing flipbook pictures if students want to talk and collaborate.

Conclusion/Review of Objective and learning that has occurred during this lesson;
Connection to future learning:

Define lakes and rivers using the characteristics we discuss.
Tomorrow: talk about valleys and plateaus.
Alternate plan: One alternate method for the lesson in case my plan isnt working.
If nearpod or smart board isnt working, we can use our iPads as whiteboards, or use
actual white boards.
