Viscosity Experiment: Nada Surf - Jemal Fondel, Blake Miller, Steven Smelley & Krishane Suresh

The document summarizes key concepts about viscosity from multiple sources. It defines viscosity as a fluid's resistance to flow and deformation. Important concepts discussed include Newton's law of viscosity, which relates shear stress and rate to viscosity. The document also distinguishes between Newtonian fluids, which have constant viscosity independent of applied forces, and non-Newtonian fluids, whose viscosity depends on applied forces. It provides examples of how viscosity is important in engineering and science applications involving fluid flow.

VISCOSITY EXPERIMENT

Nada Surf - Jemal Fondel, Blake Miller, Steven Smelley &

Krishane Suresh

Viscosity - a property of a fluid to resist the rate

of deformation; a quantitative measure of a
fluids resistance to flow
Significance:
Crucial for ChemEs to be able to predict the flow
behavior of liquids and viscosity affects it
Viscosity defines how fluids behave whether it be oil
in pipelines or blood in veins and capillaries

Newtons Law of Viscosity:

Shear Stress = Viscosity*Shear Rate
Slope = Viscosity
Shear Stress - the shear force (which acts
parallel to the direction of flow) per unit
area
Shear Rate - a.k.a. velocity gradient
(dv/dy); deformation of a fluid under the
influence of an applied shear force

Types of Fluids:
Newtonianindependent of shear force
Constant Viscosity the resistance to flow is directly proportional
to the motion of the fluid
For incompressible fluids, viscosity depends only on T

Non-Newtoniandependent on shear force
