Sequence Analysis
1998 Psychological Thriller
Sound
A quiet and soft sound of violins playing is heard as we are presented with a completely
black screen, possibly implying the calm before the storm.
A slight infrequent, upbeat, heavy and light drum and bass and techno beat sound is
then heard as the credits start to roll. This music is synchronous with the credits as the
credits flash along with the music.
A quite upbeat drum and bass tempo sound starts up thereafter, which is synchronous
with the codes/numbers that start to fill the black background behind the white pi sign.
These many codes/numbers which fill the screen and this beat only, starts off with one
important code/number: 3.14 = pi, which represents and promotes the title of the film.
All of the different beats which start at different times in the sequence (which all play
together eventually to create a very upbeat piece of music), could possibly suggest
that within this movie, events take a while to begin, and that things happen gradually.
All of the sound used in this sequence is non-diegetic.
Editing
Text fades in from black at the beginning.
Zoom in to white at the end.
Typography
The sans serif font suggests formality and simplicity within the film
which contrasts with the graphic designs and images displayed.
The drum and bass music within most of the sequence is
synchronous with the graphic designs and images and text which
creates fluidity and consistency.
Graphic designs/images
The grey, black and white colours indicate an old, monochrome feeling
and impression that the film may have on its audience.
Final thoughts
Overall, I think that the music, typography, graphic designs/images and
editing all complement each other if any of them are used
synchronously, but most importantly, I think that all of these micro
elements complement the genre of the film well as they apply a fastpaced, heart racing, crazy feeling upon the audience which are general
feelings associated with thrillers. Therefore the opening title sequence
is possibly trying to get the audience warmed up and make them
expectant and aware of what is yet to come...
