Lab Report

The document describes a lab report comparing plant and animal cells. The purpose was to observe differences between an onion (plant) cell and a cheek (animal) cell. It was hypothesized that onion cells would have a cell wall and chloroplasts while cheek cells would not. Materials used included onion, stains, slides, cover slips, toothpicks and microscopes. The procedure involved preparing slides of each cell type and observing under microscopes at different powers to identify structures like the nucleus, cell membrane, cytoplasm and organelles.

Comparing Plant and Animal Cells Lab Report

: Purpose
To determine and observe the difference between an animal cell
.(cheek cell) and a plant cell (onion cell)

: Hypothesis
Cheek cells have a nucleus, plasma membrane and cytoplasm
whereas onion cells have a nucleus, plasma membrane, cytoplasm,
.cell wall and chloroplasts

: Materials
Onion
Iodine stain
Methylene blue stain
Slide and cover slip
Dropper
Toothpick
Microscope

: Procedure
A) Onion cell lab
.Obtain a thin slice of onion from the teacher .1
.Put a drop of iodine stain on a slide .2
.Be careful, stains can ruin clothing and other materials Place onion slice in iodine stain on the slide. The slice should not .3
.be wrinkled or folded
.Put a cover slip over the stain .4

Observe under the microscope under low, medium and high .5

.powers
Draw your observations on your paper for low, medium and high .6

Label the cell membrane, nucleus, cytoplasm and any other .organelles you observe (i.e. vacuoles)
.Place your used materials in the designated area .7
B) Cheek cell lab
.Obtain a clean slide and cover slip .1
.Put a drop of methylene blue on a slide .2
.Be careful, stains can ruin clothing and other materials Gently rub the end of a toothpick on the inside of your mouth .3
.along the cheek
.Be careful! Do not gouge out your cheek .Stir the toothpick in the methylene blue stain .4
.Immediately, throw the toothpick away .5
