Lesson Plan 2 - Resistance in Series and Parallel

This lesson plan is for a 9th grade science class on November 2nd about resistance in series and parallel circuits. The learning objectives are for students to use formulas to calculate total resistance in series and parallel circuits and identify patterns in experimental data. The lesson will begin with a review of Ohm's law and practice questions. Students will then work through examples and practice calculating total resistance in series and parallel circuits using formulas. They will identify patterns when adding identical resistors in parallel and discuss how to identify relationships in data. The lesson aims to demonstrate the effect of connecting circuits in series and parallel on total resistance.

Lesson Plan

Day: M T W T F

Date: 11/02/16 Time: 8:50am Year: 9

Learning Area: Science

in Parallel

Topic: Resistance in Series

Curriculum content description: (from ACARA)

Energy transfer through different mediums can be explained using wave and
particle models (ACSSU182)

Students prior knowledge and experience:

Understanding how the basic components of a circuit interact, the

representative symbols and how to connect them
Prepare diagrams of simple circuits
Understand the concepts of volts, current and resistance and units of
measurement
Factors affecting the resistivity of a resistor
Introduction to OHMs law
Ability to add fractions using common denominators
Ability to perform basic unit conversions
Ability to manipulate formulas using cross-multiplication/inversion

Learning purpose: To demonstrate the effect of connecting circuits in

series and parallel on total resistance and to be able calculate total circuit
resistance in these configurations

Learning objectives:
On completion of this lesson,
students will be able to:
1. Use formulas to calculate the
total resistance in parallel and
series circuits.
2. Identify
patterns
in
experimental data and to infer
relationships between variable
based on the data.

Evaluation:
1. Students will demonstrate their
ability to use formulas to
determine
total
resistance
through
in-class
group
questions (ppt presentation),
the Electricity Calculations
worksheet, and through a
validation test (18/2/16).
2. Students will demonstrate the
ability to identify patterns in
data
through
an
in-class
question (contained in the
slide-show) and the following
discussion.

Preparation and Resources:

Students will need
Pencil cases
Writing tools and book
Calculator
Teacher will prepare
Slides including practice questions
Electricity Calculations Worksheet

Catering for diversity

(this class contains no learning disabilities or ESL students)

Students who finish early to continue on with OHMs law worksheet

(set as homework) or work on the design of their model house/circuit
If students are behind, pair with students who are ahead to copy notes
and solutions.
Adequate demonstrations and regular checking of comprehension.
Ensure questions are directed to students who do not regularly answer
along with students who do.

Timin Learning Experiences:

1. Introduction:

s
5min
s

Move students into the class in an orderly manner and have

them sit in the pre-prepared groups of desks.
Introduce the lesson by asking about students interests in
science and how many will consider going on to study physics.
Further questions about progress with model house project/a
segway into brief power-point of funny/quirky model houses used
to gain attention.
2. Sequence of learning experiences:

10
mins

1. Complete review of OHMs law and associated mathematic

symbols practice question, the triangular tool used for
manipulating OHMs law.
- Ask for students to explain the concept of direct
proportionality and identify the symbols for direct
proportionality and independent/constant variables.
- Ask selected students to come up to the board and
demonstrate solutions to group practice questions.
2. Work through solutions for the Electricity calculations

worksheet
Check if everyone agrees with answers, if so move on. If
not, spend time showing correct working.

3. Slide #1: Resistance in circuits

Ask students to copy down notes and do quick example on
board from power point.
4. Slide #2 and #3: resistance in series
- Highlight direct process for calculating in series: addition
- Two examples: ask group to workings and ask for answer
5. Slides #4 and # 5: Resistance in Parallel
- Work through example very slowly and deliberately and
check for understanding of mathematics
- Ask students to calculate practice questions and work
through on the board
- Ask for students to try adding successive identical resistors
in parallel and identify pattern
- Discuss how to identify patterns using data and introduce
specific law relating to above.
6. Slide #6: Resistance in Combination Circuits
- Introduce concept/process of how to tackle calculations
- Remind students that this is assessable content
3. Lesson conclusion:

3
mins

Discuss differences between resistance and parallel, which

is better on the basis of total resistance?
Discuss identification of patterns and how this will be used
later in school/experiments.
Remind students that homework is due on Monday.

Lesson Evaluation:
Overall the lesson went well, however some I made some basic errors
regarding copying of the formula for OHMs law which could have been
avoided by preparing the basic formula on the board prior to lesson. In
addition:
I was good at recapping/contextualizing content and using students
to demonstrate answers.

Remained calm and confident even when errors in slides were

apparent.
Used an attention grabbing beginning to the lesson funny model
houses which worked quite well.
Summarized/concluded the topic well and reminded of homework
due Monday
Was good at checking for comprehension.
However, I could have done the following things better:
I wrongly assumed that there would be enough time to introduce
combination circuits we didnt quite finish covering the formula for
adding identical parallel resistors.
Some cross-curriculum algebraic techniques (cross multiplication)
should have been explained without prompting from my mentor.
Checked that data in slides was correct worked through all
calculations thoroughly.
