Department of Physics Assignment (Unit II) 1. What are matter waves? Derive an expression for the wavelength associated with a particle of mass m and Kinetic energy E. 2. Write a short note on wave particle duality with examples of a suitable experiment. 3. Show that the phase velocity of de Broglie wave is greater than the velocity of light, but the group velocity is equal to the velocity of the particle with which the waves are associated. 4. What is the physical significance of wave function? Derive time dependent and independent Schrodinger wave equation. 5. What is the energy of a gamma photon having a wavelength of 1 . 6. What is the uncertainty in the momentum of an electron which is restricted to a region of linear dimension equal to 1 ? 7. A particle of rest mass m0 has a kinetic energy K. Show that its de Broglie wavelength is given by: =hc/{K(K+2moc2)}1/2 8. Derive the expression of phase velocity vp=c{1+(moc/h)2}1/2 9. An electron has de Broglie wavelength 2x10 -12m. Find its kinetic energy. Also find the wave velocity the phase and group velocities of its de Broglie waves. 10. Hydrogen atom has the radius of 0.5 . Calculate the kinetic energy needed by an electron to be confined to the atom. 11. Find the energy of an electron moving in one dimension in an infinitely high potential box of width 1 (mass of the electron is 9.11x10 -31 kg and h= 6.63x10-34 J-s). 12. A particle is confined to move in a box of length 2 whose ends are at x=0 and x=2 . What is the probability of finding the particle between 1.6000 and 1.6001 . Calculate for n=1.
