Optical Instrumen Ts Descriptio Ns Types of Lenses: Convex Lens

Optical instruments are devices that use lenses to magnify distant objects or record images. There are several types of optical instruments including microscopes, telescopes, and cameras. Microscopes use convex and concave lenses to magnify small objects, while telescopes use lenses to make faraway objects appear closer. Cameras record images by focusing light through a lens onto film or a sensor. The human eye is similar to a camera in that both use a lens to focus light and form an image, and both have light-sensitive surfaces - the retina in the eye and film or sensor in cameras. However, the eye's lens remains stationary while the pupil and iris adjust to focus and control light levels.

It is an optical
instrument designed
to make distant
objects appear nearer,
containing an
arrangement of
lenses, by which rays
of light are collected
and focused and the
resulting image is
magnified.

It is an optical
instrument for
recording images,
which may be stored
locally or
transmitted to
another location.

Types of
Lenses
Convex Lens
serves as the
objective while
the Concave
Lens serves as
the ocular lens
or the eyepiece.

Converging

It is also called as
hand lens in
laboratory contexts.
It is an optical
instrument which is
used to produce a
magnified image of
an object. The lens
is usually mounted
in a frame with a
handle.

Comparison of Human Eye to a

Camera
The Lens
Both the camera and the human eye have a lens that focuses light into
an inverted image. One major difference between the two lenses
though is that while a camera lens moves closer or farther from an
object in order to bring it into focus, the lenses of the human eye stay

stationary. To bring an object into focus, muscles in the eye respond to

instructions from the brain and change the shape of the lens, thus
sharpening the image.

The Retina to Film or Sensor

The eyes Retina is like a cameras film or sensor onto which light is
cast. In the eye, light passes through the lens and hits the retina,
where rods and cones help transform the received image into electric
impulses that are sent along the optic nerve to the brain. While both
the retina and a cameras film are all highly sensitive to light, the eye
is much more so, and performs much better in the dark even without
a flash.

The Iris to Aperture

To allow the right amount of light, both the eye and camera have an
aperture. The eyes version is its iris working together with the pupil,
which, just like a camera aperture, widens or narrows depending on the
amount of ambient light. Therefore, just the right amount of light hits
either the eyes retina or cameras film or sensor so as to present a
clear, discernible image.
