ttel: Divisions within the Country

England
England and Wales are divided into conties, which are of early medaeval origin and, look
back to a tousand years of history. Many of them have the shire in their name
because this was the old Anglo-Saxon word for county. The borders are historical
accidents and most of them do not correspond to geographical or political regions.
Three main regions:
-

The North: hilliest section of Britain from Midland to the Scottish border.
The Midlands: from Severn estuary to the Wash. The line separating the midlands
from the North starts from the nothern edge of Wales and ends at the Wash as well.
It looks like a triangle with Birmingham in the middle.
The South: subdivided into 3 regions
the Southeast: London area and the sorrounding counties. Good career
opportunities, great business life. The most densely populated and expensive.
East Anglia: Easternmost part of England,/ the peninsula north-east of London/
the West Country: South-western England, the peninsula south of Wales.
The last two are relatively sparsely populated rural areas but they tave
beautiful coastlines and scenery.

Wales
Mostly covered by hills. Highest point: Snowdon/1085/.
Two main regions:
-

South Wales: densely populated area of the country. Int he river valleys large cities
Cardiff and Swansea are found.
North Wales: very small population. Full of hills and valleys.

Scotland
Two main regions:
-

the Lowlands: from the English border to the narrowest part of the isle. It has a most
fertile land in Scotland and contains the great majority of the population including the
big cities of Glasgow and Edinburgh and the great part of Dundee.
the Highlands: cover half of Scotland , but theoir population is extremely small. We
can find several lochs, beautiful mountains and rugged coastline.
Highest point: Ben Nevis/1342/ also the highest point of Britain.

Longest river: Severn- rises in Wales and after making a bend in West Midlands flows
into the Atlantic ocean.
Best known river: Thames which rises in the Midlands cross England in a south-easterly
direction and flows into the North Sea.
