Course Description:
Algebra 1 is the foundation for high school mathematics courses. It is the bridge from the
concrete to the abstract study of mathematics. This course focuses on generalizing the
algorithms of arithmetic to learn how to develop equations and mathematical formulas to
simulate real-life problems and solve them through mathematical manipulation. Topics
include simplifying expressions, evaluating and solving equations and inequalities, and
graphing linear and quadratic functions and relations. Students may access additional
open lab times as needed. Students are expected to complete weekly homework
assignments, approximate grade levels 7-9. Prerequisite: Middle School Math, PreAlgebra, or equivalent.

Progress/Evaluation Methods:
Students will build a Math Portfolio of components demonstrating their learning,
including class work, homework, sketches, notes, worksheets, tests, quizzes, and progress
reports. Students, parents and instructor will use the Math Portfolio of student work to
assess student learning and progress. Students will regularly monitor their own progress
through status-checks on the accumulation and quality of work in their individual
portfolios. Students will participate in class work, discussions, and review, with
opportunities to make adjustments to their own work.

Credits: Students successfully completing this yearlong course with a score of 80% or
higher are eligible for a 1.0 Algebra 1 high school credit. Additional WSLP documented
learning components are not required to receive credit for this course.

Classroom supplies: special paper such as graph paper, worksheets, mathematical games
and puzzles, and classroom computers. Students supply their own graphing or basic
calculator, notebook, pencils, erasure, paper, and ruler.

Course Goal: Students will understand and apply the concepts and procedures of
Algebra 1, through the study and practice of the following objectives, which are derived
from the Algebra 2 Performance Expectations of the Washington State K-12 Mathematics

Objectives:
1. Students will solve problems represented by linear, quadratic, and exponential
functions, equations, and inequalities.

2. Students will compare and order real numbers; evaluate algebraic expressions;
interpret and use exponents, square and cube roots; use algebraic properties to factor and
combine like terms in polynomials; and add, subtract, multiply, and divide polynomials.
3. Students will determine and identify relationships as functions; represent functions
with symbolic expressions, graphs, and tables; and evaluate functions and solve for x in
equations.
4. Students will write and solve linear equations and inequalities in one variable; graph
linear equations given the slope and y-intercept and/or point(s) on the line; identify and
interpret the slope and intercepts of a linear function, including equations for parallel and
perpendicular lines.
5. Students will represent quadratic functions with symbolic expressions, graphs, and
tables; sketch graphs and models of quadratic functions; solve quadratic equations that
can be factored as (ax+b)(cx+d) where a, b, c, and d are integers.
6. Students will analyze problem situations and represent them mathematically; select and
apply strategies to solve problems; evaluate solutions for reasonableness; verify accuracy;
interpret solutions in context; generalize solution strategies; read and interpret diagrams,
graphs, and text containing symbols, language, and conventions of mathematics;
summarize mathematical ideas; synthesize information to draw conclusions; evaluate the
arguments and conclusions of others; use inductive and deductive reasoning.
