Be relaxed. Focus on the interview. This will help you in being more concentrated, self-
confident and calm. Smile & shake hands firmly with the interviewers. Remember the
interviewer’s name. Address the interviewer with his name prefixed with Mr./ Ms.
Look alert. Sit up erect. Look into your interviewer’s eyes during the interview. This shows
confidence. Interviewers like candidates who are enthusiastic and responsive. Maintain
eye contact with your interviewer. Beware of slouching in chair, tapping feet, playing with
eyeglasses, pencil, or nervous laughter, flicking your hair, scratching your head.
Set goals for the interview. It is your job to leave the meeting feeling secure that the
interviewer knows as much as he or she possibly can about your skills, abilities,
experience and achievements. Try to relate your answers to the interviewer and his or her
company. Focus on achievements relevant to the position.
Listening is one of the most important interview skills. A candidate must concentrate on
listening. Listen through eye contact. This helps in staying with the interviewer. Listen
with nonverbal expressions, nod and appear interested. Do not interrupt the interviewer
while he is speaking
Know the question behind the questions. Ultimately, the employer is interested to know,
"Why should he hire you?" Be sure you answer that completely.
Interviewing is about selling. The product you are selling is you. Give the employer
reasons to buy. Tell them what you can do for them. Emphasize what you can bring to the
company, department and position. Convince them that your product is better than the
competition's.
Reflect a Positive outlook. Avoid negative comments about past employers. Don’t dwell on
criticism of your present or previous employers.
Be smart about questions related to salary. Don't tell the interviewer your financial
expectations. Instead, ask what salary range the job falls in. Attempt to postpone a money
discussion until you have a better understanding of the scope of responsibilities of the job.
Once the interview is over, thank the interviewer(s) for the time and consideration given
to you. Ask when you should meet again to discuss the position further.
Following the interview, send an individual note/ letter/ e-mail of thanks to the
interviewers.
