Experiment 2: Transfer Characteristics of An NMOS: Group 8

The document describes an experiment to characterize the transfer characteristics of an NMOS transistor and enhance its small signal gain. The objectives are to calculate the small signal gain of a common source amplifier and increase the gain by changing the drain resistor value RD and using two NMOS transistors in parallel. Data tables show the drain-source voltage VDS for varying gate-source voltages VGS using single and dual NMOS configurations with different RD values. Plots of voltage transfer characteristics and small signal gain demonstrate increased gain from higher RD and multiple transistors. Discussions analyze the linearity of amplification and presence of harmonics in the output signal.

2.) Small Signal gain plot

3) Amplification of the signal

4) Different harmonics present in the signal

Discussions:
Abhinav Kumar Verma, 14EC30001
1.) The graph observed as a result of this experiment was expetcted from theorectical result

too.
2.) Two ways of increasing gain are to increase the resistance RD or to put two NMOS in
parallel.
3.) Increase in gain results to decrease in maximum swing of input possible.
4.) By curve fitting of what is normally thought tobe linear part to a polynomial, we can predict
the harmonics that will be present in the output signal.

Arvind Srivastav, 14EC30007

1. The gain variation of the VTC curve infers that we can have steeper curve with increase
in RD. More gain comes at cost of additional NMOS.
2. As expected, we should record many observation in the active region.
3. In choosing the bias point for the small signal amplification, a small signal gain plot can
provide better insight.
4. As it comes in the Fig.3, the amplification is not perfectly linear. The reason is, we took
the output polynomial of degree 3. (Using polyfit in MATLAB) .
5. The Fourier transform of the output Fig.4 is consistent with the coefficients of the
polynomial of output signal:
Vout(x) = 22.4171 - 7.6178x + 3.1634x2 - 0.8562x3
