Narrative Structure

The document discusses narrative structure theories and how they relate to an opening sequence involving a female protagonist. It summarizes that according to Todorov's theory, the sequence follows the stages of equilibrium, disruption and realization but not restored order. It also notes that according to Barthes' theory of ambiguity, the ending leaves the audience unsure of the protagonist's fate, relating to Barthes' concept of an enigma code that draws the audience in.

NARRATIVE STRUCTURE

BY A S H A M A E S W Y E R

THEORIES - TODOROV
Our opening sequence begins with a sense of
equilibrium, with the female protagonist waiting
patiently to be picked up. As the story progresses,
the narrative becomes disrupted, and then
realisation for the audience as they become aware
that she is being chased. This relates to Todorovs
theory that narratives follow a 5-part structure
(Equilibrium-Disruption-Realisation-Restored OrderEquilibrium). However, there is no restored order
for the female protagonist in the opening
sequence.

THEORIES - BARTHES
By the end, when the female protagonist is
captured by the unnamed Creature, there is a
sense of ambiguity as it is unclear to the audience
what has happened to her, and whether or not she
is still alive. Because of this ambiguity, there is also
some relation to Barthes Hermeneutic/Enigma
code, that states that theres a mystery within the
text. The fact that this mystery is left unresolved
helps to draw the audience in, persuading them to
watch more.
