ME102: Engineering Mechanics
Homework #1
P1.
The unstretched length of the spring of modulus k = 1.2 kN/m is 100 mm. When pin P is
in the position = 30, determine the x- and y-components of the force which the spring
exerts on the pin. (The force in a spring is given by F = kx, where x is the deflection from
the unstretched length.)
P2.
Two cables are used to secure the overhang boom in position and support the 1500-N
load. If the resultant force is directed along the
boom from point A towards O, determine the
values of x and z for the coordinates of point C
and the magnitude of the resultant force. Set FB
= 1610 N and FC = 2400 N.
P3.
Determine the magnitude of force F so that the
resultant force of the three forces is as small as
possible. What is the magnitude of this smallest
resultant force?
P4. A crate of mass 80 kg is held in the position
shown. Determine:
(a) the moment produced by the weight W of the
crate about E:
(b) the smallest force applied at A that creates a
moment of equal magnitude and opposite sense
about E:
(c) the magnitude, sense, and point of application on
the bottom of the crate of the smallest vertical force
that creates a moment of equal magnitude and
opposite sense about E.
P5. As follower AB rolls along the surface of
member C, it exerts a constant force F perpendicular
to the surface:
(a) Replace F with an equivalent force-couple
system at Point D obtained by drawing the
perpendicular from the point of contact to the x-axis
(b) For a = 1 m and b = 2 m, determine the value of
x for which the moment of the equivalent forcecouple system at D is maximum.
P6. A vertical load P is applied at end B of rod BC:
(a) Neglecting the weight of the rod, express the angle
corresponding to the equilibrium position in terms of P, l,
and the counterweight W
(b) Determine the value of corresponding to
equilibrium if P = 2W.
