CURRENT WORK
1. Hand Vein Pattern Recognition System
Field: Biometrics
(Aug 2009 Onwards)
The vein tree pattern of the back of the hand contains information that is capable of authenticating the
identity of an individual. Back of the hand is projected to a specific Infrared source. The vein tree
pattern is picked up by a CCD camera with an infrared filter installed on its objective lens to construct
a pure infrared image for the back of the hand, and converted by a computer into a digital image.
Image is then processed and compared with a robust algorithm developed in MATLAB to authenticate
the required person. Project under Electronics Section, IIT Roorkee.
PROJECTS COMPLETED
2. Study and implementation of Viola Jones Face Detection Algorithm
Field: Image Processing/Neural Networks

(May 2009 Jul 2009)

This project focuses on implementation of Rectangular Based Feature Extraction for Face Detection
within an image. Rectangle Features were extracted from a 50x50 grayscale face analyzing window
from an integral image. These features were fed and compared using concepts of Neural Networking in
MATLAB using Neural Networks Toolbox. The program achieved reasonable rate of accuracy but with
lesser speed as specified in the original publication.
3. Conversion of an Image into its ASCII Text Pattern
Field: Image Processing

(Mar 2009 May 2009)

The project was to acquaint self to the basics of Digital Image Processing. It involved mathematical
analysis of an image (usually in JPEG format) and its conversion to ASCII notations. To get an ASCII
notation for a block pixel value at each point must be determined. Using image processing concepts
such as block processing, an algorithm that can automatically create a best fit ASCII text image was
successfully developed in MATLAB.
4. Fastest Finger First
Field: Hardware Design

(Dec 2008 Mar 2009)

Quiz-Type game shows are increasingly becoming popular these days. In such games, Fastest Finger
First Indicators (FFFIs) are used to test the players reaction time. The players designated number is
displayed with an audio alarm when a player presses his entry button. The whole schematic for the
circuit was developed using OrCAD Design and simulated using PSpice before developing it onto a
Printed Circuit Board. The project won the 3rd prize in Electronics Design Exhibition in SRISHTI 09,
Annual Hobbies Club Technical Festival at IIT Roorkee. Project under Electronics Section.
