This lesson plan summary addresses Iowa Teaching Standard 4 and aligns classroom instruction with local standards. The lesson began with a review of weekly vocabulary words from the story "I Could Do That", asking questions to help students connect words to their lives. As the vocabulary involved government terms, students were able to relate words to an upcoming election and caucus. This led to an engaged class discussion. The teacher reflected that students enjoyed partner and whole-class discussions, but needed practice respectfully discussing differing opinions.

Description of artifact and how the artifact meets the standard:
This artifact is a reading lesson over the story I Could Do That. In this lesson, the students began by reviewing our
weekly vocabulary words. The students were asked questions about each of the vocabulary words and then given the
opportunity to talk with their neighbor about the question and that word. The questions help the students connect to their
life. This lessons vocabulary involves the government. Due to the upcoming election and caucus, the students were able
to connect the words with the questions as well as what they have been seeing in the media. This led to a great
discussion.
Reflection on artifact:
This activity was exciting for the students. They enjoy having the opportunity to have discussions with the class as a
whole as well as their partner. This lesson helped me realize that I need to create more opportunities for my students to
have whole class discussions. Many of the students were very passionate about their connections and had a hard time
respectfully talking about their classmates differing opinion.
