Assignment 1 Mass Transfer Operations

This document contains an assignment with three questions regarding mass transfer operations: 1. Estimate the diffusivity of NH3 in air using the Hirschfelder equation and compare to experimental values. 2. Calculate the diffusivity of CO2 in air using rate of transfer data from a column operating at different conditions. 3. Calculate the time required for Toluene layers of different depths and tank sizes to evaporate using the diffusivity of Toluene in air.

Mass Transfer Operations

Assignment # 1

Question # 1 :
Estimate the diffusivity of NH3 in air at 273 K and 1 atm using the Hirschfelder
equation. Compare this estimate with the experimental value. Values of the LennardJones parameters and /k are:

Question # 2 :
CO2 is absorbed in water from mixture with air using a column operating at pressure
of 2 atm and temperature of 10 oC. Resistance to mass transfer can be regarded as
laying entirely within the gas phase. At a point in the column the partial pressure of
CO2 is 70 mmHg and the back pressure at the water interface is negligible. The
resistance to mass transfer in a stationary gas film is 1-mm thickness. The rate of
transfer per unit area at that point in the column is 3x10 -6 gmol/cm2 sec. Find the
diffusivity of CO2 in air if the column operates at 1 atm and 3 oC and compare the
calculated value with the listed one.
Question # 3 :
A layer of Toluene 7.5 mm deep lies at the bottom of an open rectangular tank-A of
1.5x2 m. The tank temperature is 25 oC and diffusivity of Toluene in air is 6.5x10-6
m2/s at this temperature. If the vapor pressure of Toluene in the tank is 14.5 kN/m2 and
the diffusion may be assumed to take place through a stagnant film of 3 mm thick,
how long will it take for the Toluene to evaporate? The density of Toluene is 910
kg/m3.
If tank-B contains similar amount of mass of Toluene, and has a dimensions of 3x5 m,
how long will it take for the Toluene to evaporate. Comment on the results.
