Commissioner William J. Bratton
New York City Police Department
1 Police Plaza
New York, NY 10007
Dear Commissioner Bratton:
‘We write to express our concem about the alarming increase in crimes committed against the
Asian American community in New York City.
According to the anmasl “Crime and Enforcement Activity in New York City” repom your
Department produces,’ “Asian/Pacific Islander” was the only racelethnicity category that
experienced an increase in the percetage of victims fr every typeof eine ensured between
208 and 2014, the yeas for which reports have been smnde publicly avaiable. Unfortunately,
the rise in New York City’s Asian American population does not secount for the increasing
number of Aslan American victims of crime. For example, between 2008 and 2014, Asian
“Americans went fiom accounting for 2.1% ofthe victims of felony sex crimes Wo 55% —the rato
more than doubled, unlike the re ia the Asin Americen population a the cy. Furthemnoe,
the porentage of Hispanic victims fll dramatically wile their overall share of te city's
‘piton increased. Clearly, troublesome trends ae emerging
ankly, we do not know what the underlying causes of these disturbing trends are. Nor do we
necessarily know the solution. What we do ask, however, is that the NYPD prioritize combating,
the growing trend of Asian American victims of crime, and that you keep us informed of the
steps you are taking to counter these trends. Increasing the number of Asian Americans who are:
‘uniformed NYPD officers, curently only 6.2% of the force, to align more closely with te city’s
‘Asian American population may be a good frst step.
We look forward to working with you to solve this growing problem, and thank you for your
Sincerely,
oF Congress Member of Congress
