FACE OF AMERICA
Renowned artist Kip Fulbeck explores issues of mixed
race identity in this multimedia presentation on
icons of race and sex in the United States, a
country that ignores multiraciality.
In conjunction with an exhibition at The Field Museum:
kip fulbeck: part asian, 100% hapa | April 2 - September 6, 2010

A term meaning “half” in Hawaiian, hapa serves as a term of pride by many

whose heritage includes Asian or Pacific Island descent. To hapa people young
and old, artist Kip Fulbeck asks “What are you?” -- a question commonly
posed to people of mixed ancestry. The answers to this question are photo-
graphic portraits paired with the subjects’ own hand-written, frank, and funny
responses.

The traveling version of kip fulbeck: part asian, 100% hapa is organized by the
Japanese American National Museum in Los Angeles, California, and is supported, in
part, by the James Irvine Foundation.
Co-sponsors: Asian American Studies, Chancellor’s Committee on the Status of Asian Americans,
Chicago Japanese American Historical Society, Honors College, Office of Diversity, Office of the
Vice Provost for Undergraduate Affairs
The UIC Centers for Diversity are: African-American Cultural Center, Asian American Resource and
Cultural Center, Gender and Sexuality Center, Latino Cultural Center, and Women’s Leadership
