To keep the player engaged you need to plot a story that is more than
just a series of events . It should have a planned and carefully paced
progression towards a dramatic ending.
HERE IS A MODEL SUGGESTED BY PROFESSIONAL GAMES WRITERS :
EXCITING OPENING
Which draws the player into the game immediately (e.g.
Resident Evil 4 + 5)
SLOW DOWN THE ACTION
So the player can become familiar with the controls and
style of gameplay
BUILD SUSPENSE
Put the player in a dangerous or challenging situation,
set a mini quest, use a
puzzle, include a surprise or a mystery, use a mini boss
fight .
CREATE EXHILIRATION MORE EXCITEMENT
An important development in the story, a boss battle, the
first encounter with the antagonist, an exciting new
pickup, weapon upgrade or ability.
