Division Properties of Exponents 1

To divide expressions with the same base, subtract the exponents. Any nonzero number to the zero power is 1. Any nonzero number to a negative power is equal to the reciprocal of that number to the positive power. Simplifying expressions involves grouping like terms, applying exponent rules such as subtracting exponents or taking reciprocals of negative exponents, and using properties of zero exponents.

Division Properties of Exponents
Negative Exponents Any nonzero number raised to the zero power is 1; for example, (0.5)0 = 1. Any
nonzero number raised to a negative power is equal to the reciprocal of the number raised to the opposite power;
for example,
