Integerrulesworksheet 2

Integers are positive and negative whole numbers. When adding integers, if the signs are the same, add the numbers and keep the sign. If the signs are different, subtract the numbers and take the sign of the number with the larger absolute value. When subtracting integers, change the subtraction problem into an addition problem by keeping the sign of the first number, changing the subtraction sign to addition, and changing the sign of the second number. Multiplying integers results in a positive product if the signs are the same and a negative product if the signs are different. Dividing integers produces a positive quotient if the signs are the same and a negative quotient if the signs are different.

Integer Rules

Date: ______________

Integers are the set of negative and positive whole numbers.

Adding Integers

If the signs are the same

Add the numbers and keep the sign.
+5 + +2 = +7 or -5 + -2 = -7

If the signs are different

Subtract the numbers and take the sign of
the number with the largest absolute value.
+5 + -2 = +3 or -5 + +2 = -3

Subtracting Integers

Change the subtraction problem into an

addition problem with keep, change,
change.
1. Keep the sign of the first number.
2. Change the subtraction (-) to addition (+)
3. Change the sign of the second number.
keep

change

+5

-2 = +7
change

Rewritten as:
keep

+5

change
-5

+ +2 = +7

+2 = -7
change

Rewritten as: -5 + -2 = -7
4. Use the addition rules.

Multiplying Integers

If the signs are the same

Multiply and the product is positive.
+5 +2 = +10 or -5 -2 = +10

If the signs are different

Multiply and the product is negative.
+5 -2 = -10 or -5 +2 = -10

Dividing Integers

If the signs are the same

Divide and the quotient is positive.
+10 +2 = +5 or -10 -2 = +5

If the signs are different

Divide and the quotient is negative.
+10 -2 = -5 or -10 +2 = -5
