Assignment 2

1) A balloon carrying a thermometer rises through the atmosphere recording temperature. Given the temperature varies with altitude and the balloon reports 0°C at 3000m, the problem asks for the true altitude where 0°C occurs. 2) Temperature-time data is given for heating an object. The problem asks to plot the data, determine the time constant, write the first-order equation, plot the theoretical curve, and decide if it can be considered a single time-constant process. 3) Given a first-order instrument must measure signals up to 100Hz within 5% accuracy, the summary asks to determine the maximum time constant and calculate the phase shift at 50Hz and 100Hz.

Homework #2; ME226 (Mechanical Measurement)

Due 28/Jan/2016
1) A balloon carrying a first-order thermometer, with a 15-s time constant, rises through the
atmosphere at 6 m/s. Assume temperature varies with altitude at 0.150C/30 m. The balloon
radios the temperature and altitude readings back to the ground. At 3000 m the balloon says
the temperature is 00C. What is the true altitude at which 00C occurs?

2) The following temperature-time data were recorded.

a) Plot the data points.

b) From the plot, determine the time constant for the system.
c) Write an equation assuming first-order process.
d) Calculate sufficient points to plot the theoretical curve.
e) Decide, on the basis of the plot, whether or not the process may be considered a single
time-constant first-order type.

3) A first-order instrument must measure signals with frequency content up to 100Hz with an
amplitude inaccuracy of 5 percent. What is the maximum allowable time constant? What will
be the phase shift at 50 and 100Hz?
