Math 3032 - Complex Functions and Pdes Assignment 1
This assignment involves solving differential equations using series methods. Students are asked to:
1) Check if points are ordinary or regular singular points, and solve two equations using series methods accordingly.
2) Write the general solutions to four Bessel and parametric Bessel equations.
3) Show that a given function P2(x) is a solution to the Legendre equation by differentiating.

MATH 3032 - Complex functions and PDEs
Assignment 1
Chapter 5: Series Solutions
1. Consider the following differential equations (a) (x2 1)y 00 + xy 0 y = 0
(b) 2xy 00 + 5y 0 + xy = 0
(i) Check if x = 0 is an ordinary point or a regular singular point for
each equation. (ii) Solve (a) and (b) using series according to the methods for x = 0 ordinary or regular singular point 2. Write the general solution of the following Bessel and parametric Bessel equations: (a) 7x2 y 00 + 7xy 0 + (7x2 21)y = 0 (b) x2 y 00 + xy 0 + (2x2 1/9)y = 0 (c)x2 y 00 + xy 0 + (x2 16)y = 0 (d)x2 y 00 + xy 0 + (5x2 16)y = 0 3. Show, by differentiating, that P2 (x) = 21 (3x2 1) is a solution of the Legendre equation: (1 x2 )y 00 2xy 0 + 6y = 0.
