Automotive Parts & Accessories, Heavy
Duty Equipment, Appliances, & Others)
& By Region - Global Forecasts to
2020 report analyzes the global e-coat
market with respect to market drivers,
restraints, opportunities, and challenges
in different regions.
E-coat is a unique immersion coating process in which electrically charged
particles are deposited out of a water suspension to coat a conductive part. In this
process, a positive charge is applied to the
paint bath and a negative charge is applied to the parts to be-coated. The paint
particles are suspended in water. The
paint allows an electric current to travel
from one paint particle to another till
it reaches the part where the paint particles electrically attach themselves to the
surfaces of the part. The parts are then
processed through a bake oven where the
paint is melted onto the part for fusion
bonding and then heat cured to form a
hard and durable film to coat the part.
The drivers identified for the electrocoating market are growing automotive
and appliance industry. Developing countries such as China, India, and Brazil are
the major consumers of e coat. The market in countries of Middle East and Africa
are also growing. In developed countries
such as the U.S., Spain, Germany, Japan,
and Italy, the market is growing at a low
to moderate rate.
Asia-Pacific is the largest market
for e-coat, both in terms of volume
and value, followed by Western Europe
and North America. The key companies in this market are Axalta Coating
Systems (U.S.), BASF SE (Germany),
Hawking
Electrotechnology
(U.K.),
KCC Corporation (South Korea), Koch
Membrane Systems Inc. (U.S.), Luvata
Oy (Finland), MetoKote Corporation,
Inc. (U.S.), Nippon Paint Holdings Co.,
Ltd. (Japan), PPG Industries, Inc. (U.S.),
Luvata Oy (Finland), and the Valspar
Corporation (U.S.).
The e-coat market, in terms of value
and volume, is estimated by considering
the current and future projections according to the economic and industrial outlook. This analysis also covers important
developments, expansions, partnerships
& agreements, and mergers & acquisitions of the leading global companies.
The market size, in terms of value, of
e-coat was estimated to be about $2.87
billion in 2015 and is projected to reach
$3.69 bBillion by 2020, at a CAGR of
5.12% between 2015 and 2020.
The market size of e-coat majorly depends on new production of automobiles
such as passenger cars, commercial vehicles, heavy duty construction, and agricultural equipments. The e-coat offers
superior performance and are cheaper.
They also comply with environmental
regulations. Because of this characteristics, e-coat is in high demand in end-use
industries such as appliances, automotive, construction, and furniture. The restraints in the market is the initial high

AQUAFluor 5001 and 5002
for Vinyl Windows
Sherwin-Williams has announced that
vinyl window OEMs, extruders and job
shops that apply finishes now can deliver
excellent weatherability and reduce excessive heat buildup across all colors with
a new formulation. The company introduces KEM AQUAFluor 5001 and 5002,
premium waterborne coatings formulated with Kynar Aquatec polyvinylidene
fluoride (PVDF) resin.
Vinyl window profiles are a growing
market in both new construction and
remodeling. According to the company,
in the residential segment, customers
are seeking to express themselves in
their homes exteriors with non-white
colors and finishes. Homeowners and
commercial window customers value
the energy efficient and cost effective
properties of vinyl.
KEM AQUAFluor 5001 is a singlecomponent, waterborne product. The
KEM AQUAFluor 5002 product requires mixing of two components. It
provides additional scratch and mar
resistance to withstand the rigors of
cutting, punching and machining window extrusions (lineals) after finishing.
This reduces the potential for damage
during shipment and installation. Both
products are formulated with solar reflective technology designed to reduce
heat buildup in dark colors.
Other key benefits of the Kynar
Aquatec PVDF resin include inherent
mold and mildew resistance, as well as
enhanced resistance to rain, chemicals,

GDP in the EUs 28 member states will rise
by 1.8 percent this year, according to the latest
economic forecast of the European Commission,
the EUs Brussels-based executive. This would
be the EUs highest annual growth rate for five
years and would bring the Unions output back
to the levels prior to the 2008 financial crisis.
The Commission expects that there is sufficient momentum behind the current increase in
private consumption for the growth rate to rise
to two percent next year.
In recent years growth in coatings sales in
the EU have tended to be closely aligned to rises
in GDP, especially in those countries which have
been performing relatively well economically.
In Germany, the economic powerhouse of
Europe, GDP is predicted to expand by 1.9

by three percent this year, according to
the countrys two main construction industry associations.
Much of the impetus has been coming from new residential buildings,
explained Michael Bross, spokesperson for the German coating industry
association (VdL). Decorative paint
sales gain the most when there is also
an increase in home renovations. One
third of decorative sales come from new
construction, while the rest comes from
renovation expenditure.
In the UK work on new housing has
returned to levels similar to those before
the 2008 crisis but expenditure on repairs and maintenance has remained flat
or even declined. While work on private
new housing increased by 3.9 percent in
the second quarter of this year, repair and
maintenance went down by 1.2 percent.
Growth in new construction output
in the second quarter helped boost decorative trade paint sales to a new high,
said a spokesman for the British Coatings
Federation (BCF). But the hard pressed
retail paint sector continued to struggle.
For the trade paints market, sales (volume) increased by four percent in the
quarter and is now up by 5.5 percent so
far this year.
A prolonged slump in the housing sector seems to be ending in Spain with a
sudden spurt in new housing builds in
early 2015 and the likelihood that by
the end of the year housing starts will
exceed housing completions for the first
time since 2007. However, although the

with maintaining your trade secrets confidentiality. You must provide information
on each substances chemical name, common name and synonyms, CAS no. and
other unique identifiers; impurities and
stabilizing additives; and the concentration or concentration range of each chemical in a mixture. Under CFR 1910.1200
a claim of trade secret may be made to
withhold the specific chemical identity
or the exact percentage-concentration of
a substance in a mixture. But, the claim
of the information being a trade secret
must be supported, the SDS discloses the
properties and effects of the hazardous
chemical, and the SDS indicates that the
withheld information is a trade secret. But
Appendix D clarifies that indicates actually means a statement that the specific
chemical identity and/or exact percentage
has been withheld as a trade secret. Also
of note, this section of the code clarifies
that nothing in this paragraph shall be
construed as requiring the disclosure under any circumstances of process information which is a trade secret, so the issues
seem confined to chemical identity and/or
concentration. In looking around for nonchemically identifying names that can be
used, the term trade secret ingredient or
proprietary ingredient seems acceptable.
Because the major purpose of a SDS is
to provide guidance as to how to handle a
hazardous material, and what to do medically, the lack of details on a hazardous trade
secret material may be frustrating to medical professional. So, section 1910.1200(i)
(iv)-(i)(2) specifies that the specific chemical identity and percentage is made available to health professionals, employees, and
designated representatives when a treating physician or nurse determines that a
medical emergency exists and the specific
chemical identity and/or specific percentage
of composition of a hazardous chemical is
necessary for emergency or first-aid treatment, the chemical manufacturer, importer,
or employer shall immediately disclose the
specific chemical identity or percentage

Introduction
Prior to the ample supply of petrochemicals, coatings were
largely derived from renewable resources such as plant oils, fats,
plant proteins, polysaccharides, terpenes, and minerals.1 As a result of the low cost and tremendous diversity of petrochemicals,
development of new coating components based on renewable/
bio-based resources was largely abandoned. Due to concerns

temperature, side chain crystallization was observed using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). For example, a weak,
broad endotherm with a peak maximum at -25 C was observed
for the SBO-based polymer. This polymer also displayed a Tg
at -92 C.9,13 Compared to the parent oil, i.e., SBO, the heat
of fusion for the SBO-based polymer was much lower indicating that the higher viscosity and polymeric nature of the latter
significantly inhibited fatty acid ester chain crystallization. The
polymer based on PO showed a melting temperature just below
room temperature, which is consistent with the relative content
of saturated fatty acid ester chains compared to the polymers
based on SBO and HSBO.14 The content of saturated fatty acid
esters in PO is intermediate between that of SBO and HSBO.
As a result of the polymeric nature of the plant oil-based
polymers, the number of bis-allylic protons, allylic protons, and
double bonds per molecule is much higher than that of the parent oil. As a result, the degree of autoxidation needed to produce a crosslinked network is significantly reduced compared
to the parent oil. In fact, it was demonstrated that a coating
produced by simply blending titanium dioxide with an SBObased polymer, i.e., poly(2-VOES), became tack-free in less than
one tenth the time required for an analogous coating based on
linseed oil to become tack-free.15 Thus, by converting a semidrying oil, such as SBO, to a polymer, drying properties can be
achieved that are far superior to that of a drying oil. This feature of the plant oil-based polymer technology also translates
to other curing chemistries. For example, the double bonds in
poly(2-VOES) were converted to epoxide groups using peracetic acid and crosslinked networks produced using an anhydride
curing agent. To illustrate the relative difference in the time required to reach the gel-point for this network as compared to an
analogous network based on epoxidized SBO (ESBO), rheological measurements were made as a function of time at 100 C.
For the epoxidized poly(2-VOES)/anhydride mixture, viscosity
began to rise after just 20 min, while 2 h was required for the
ESBO/anhydride mixture.13
A similar trend was also observed for a comparison between polyurethane networks based on a polyol derived from
poly[(2-vinyloxy)ethyl palmitate] [poly(2-VOEP)] to analogous
networks based on a polyol derived from PO. Hydroxy groups
were incorporated into poly(2-VOEP) and PO by first epoxidizing the double bonds in the materials and then ring-opening
the epoxide groups with methanol.14 In addition to providing
a lower degree of functional group conversion to produce a
crosslinked network, the molecular architecture of a plant oilbased polymer enables a significantly higher crosslink density
compared to the triglyceride analog. This feature can be attributed to the methine carbon atoms present in the polymer
backbone that function as additional crosslinks in the network
when the material is cured.13 Further, cure shrinkage for crosslinked networks derived from a plant oil-based polymer would
be expected to be lower than that for an analogous network
based on the parent triglyceride simply because of the molecular
weight difference between the two materials.
Probably the most useful aspect of the plant oil-based

cardanol by thermal decarboxylation. Cardanol is a mixture
of four different meta-alkyl phenols that differ with respect to
the degree of unsaturation in the alkyl side chain, as shown in
Figure 7.21 As a result of the success obtained with the plant
oil-based poly(vinyl ether)s described above, it was of interest to
produce and characterize poly(vinyl ether)s containing cardanol
units in the pendent chains of the repeat units. A novel vinyl
ether monomer of cardanol, i.e., cardanol ethyl vinyl ether, was
produced using the Williamson ether synthesis reaction shown
in Figure 7. This monomer was successfully polymerized using
the same polymerization system used for the production of the
plant oil-based vinyl ethers. With this polymerization system, a
soluble, tacky polymer was produced.
A solution of the homopolymer was combined with a drier
package and films were cast on steel panels. Three different curing conditions were investigated. Curing at room temperature
was done over a period of two weeks, while curing at 120 C

vinyl ether (EEVE) was produced from eugenol and 2-chloroethyl vinyl ether. This monomer was readily polymerized by
cationic polymerization to produce a soluble polymer that was
a viscous, tacky liquid at room temperature with a Tg of approximately 2 C. Using proton nuclear magnetic resonance
spectroscopy, preservation of the allyl group derived from eugenol was confirmed.
As illustrated in Figure 8, the methylene hydrogen atoms
between the vinyl group and the phenyl group should be very
labile to abstraction by singlet oxygen since the radical can be
resonance stabilized by both the adjacent double bond and
the phenyl ring. As a result, it was of interest to determine if
poly(EEVE) could be cured into a crosslinked film by autoxidation. A poly(EEVE) sample with a number-average molecular
weight of 17,900 g/mol was dissolved in toluene at 35 wt.%.
To this solution, a drier package containing cobalt 2-ethylhexanoate, zirconium 2-ethylhexanoate, and zinc carboxylate was
added. With this system, a cast film became dry-to-touch in 10
min, Coating specimens were produced using three different
curing conditions, i.e., curing at room temperature for 3 weeks,
120 C for 1 h, and 150 C for 1 h. In addition to films cast on
steel substrates, free films were produced and used to determine
film mechanical and viscoelastic properties. Table 2 shows the
properties obtained for the coatings and films produced.

Conclusion
Table 3 provides a comparison of the properties of coatings cast and cured on steel substrates. As shown in Table 3,
the hardness, flexibility, and adhesion of the coating based on
epoxidized poly(EEVE) was similar to that of the analogous

The results presented in this document demonstrate the utility of a carbocationic polymerization system for producing
novel bio-based polymers that retain the unsaturation derived from the bio-based component. The high reactivity of
the vinyl ether functional group and the appropriate choice
of the polymerization system enabled linear polymers to be
produced with relatively narrow molecular weight distributions. The ability to retain unsaturation from the bio-based
component enabled the production of crosslinked coatings
using autoxidation. The high number of allylic hydrogens
and double bonds per molecule associated with these unsaturated poly(vinyl ether)s results in relatively fast curing by
autoxidation due to the gel-point being reached at relatively
low extents of reaction. Another important aspect of this
polymer technology is the ability to utilize copolymerization
to tailor polymer and coating properties. The unsaturation
present in the polymer produced can also be easily converted
to other functional groups, such as the epoxy group, to enable other crosslinking mechanisms. CW

Parker supplies the industrial coatings market with the best filtration solutions at the lowest cost
of filter ownership. Parker filters
help manufacturers maintain pigment concentration and color, by
removing contaminants and ensuring that grind standards are met.
Filtration of fluids is also key to removing gels, and agglomerates so
only optimal properties of the end
product are reached. In removing
contaminants, Parker filters allow
desired particles to remain, and do
not contain materials which can
adversely affect adhesion.

The Dow Chemical Company
has expanded their methylene
diphenyl diisocyante (MDI) product
family. As highly, versatile chemistry, the
expanded MDI offering provides customers the option of these products as
components or in fully formulated systems for opportunities in a wide range
of markets, the company stated. The
new products include VORAMER MN
2314 Prepolymer, PAPI 23 High Airflow
Isocyanate, VORASTAR 7000 Spray
Elastomer System and ISONATE 128
modified MDI.
The new products serve a diverse mix
of markets from industrial and infrastructure to consumer comfort:
VORAMER MN 2314 Prepolymer is
a highly-processable, cost-effective polyurethane solution for formulating concrete
adhesives and sealants. Providing desirable processing and reactivity for use in
moisture-cure systems because of its low
viscosity, VORAMER MN Prepolymer
eliminates extra work and time associated
with stripping old coatings and provides
distinct advantages when compared to incumbent products, including performance
in standing water, resistance to dirt pick up
and strong adhesion and paintability.
PAPI 23 High Airflow Isocyanate is a
superior performing MDI for use in highend viscoelastic foams for the bedding
industry, helping customers provide consumers with quality bedding to achieve a
cool sleep effect. PAPI 23 High Airflow
Isocyanate has high o,p content providing excellent processing, and enhanced
foam physical properties. Inherent to the
polymers molecular design, PAPI 23 enables good airflow in and out of the foam
cells to help consumers achieve a better
nights rest.

chemical attack. A high performance,
two-component polyurea hybrid coating material, infrastructure owners using
VORASTAR 7000 system can extend the
life of steel tanks, pipeline and chemical
holding tanks thus enabling lower total
cost of ownership. The low viscosity of
VORASTAR 7000 facilitates processing and allows applicators to achieve a
smooth high gloss finish and fast return
to service, as well as a good balance of
strength and elongation, abrasion, and
wear and tear resistance due to its elastomeric properties. The system performs
very well in low temperature environments and maintains its flexibility even
in temperatures down to negative 50 degrees Celsius.
ISONATE 128 is a modified MDI of
fering superior handling and storage stability. ISONATE 128 MDI was designed
to balance needs for ease of processing
without sacrificing excellent mechanical
properties in end use applications, like
elastomers. Also, the new ISONATE 128
enables less energy consumption required
for storage, providing customers the flexibility to manufacture products through
a longer period of the year without additional insulation during storage.
target particle sizes, the mill can be operated in HDDM mode which utilizes
smaller grinding media (0.25mm to
2mm) and higher agitator shaft speeds
(1500-3000 RPM).
The combination mill is available
with a choice of two drive systems--the
electronic variable frequency drive (explosion-proof or non-explosion-proof)
or the mechanical variable speed drive
(explosion-proof). The HD-01/HDDM01 combination lab Attritor can be configured with metal-free contact parts
when necessary and is compatible with
the full line of HD-01 and HDDM-01
interchangeable parts and accessories to
maximize versatility.
