This week in FLK..

We were all about THE MITTEN!

In Language: We signed in to practice pencil grip and letter formations in our
name. We continued to read and complete various activities around 3 different
versions of THE MITTEN. We read the third version by Tresselt, used a Venn
diagram to compare the 3 versions what was the same and what was different.
We played a game where the children were the animals going into the mitten. Mrs.
Angenent worked with the children to retell the Jan Brett version in their own
words using a retell mitten stripcontributed by Mrs. Ferreira. This prompted
some investigation into animals such as the badger and the hedgehog. We continued
using morning messages to practice concepts of print and other skills. We had a
scavenger hunt for the first 7 sight words we have learned : a, and, all, as, am, an,
be, by. We continued with our Jolly Phonics and learned the letter name and
sounds of Xx. The First Years continued in their Jolly Phonics booklets while the
Second Years added labels and/or sentences to their super hero, the Team from
Planet X they are excellent examples of extreme excitement!
We also has our last Surprise Bag Show n Share items. Luciano shared his
transformer robot. Well done ! We began our 2nd round of Star Days. Joe was
our leader once again! Joe discussed many of the pictures in the book called
KILLER CREATURES. Huh, imagine Joe the Scientist choosing THIS book to
WOW! us with! Thanks Joe! You set the bar high once again!
We had no Library this week.
Gym: We worked on ball skills and played a game called SNOWBALL FIGHT!
Religion: We read the Jan Brett book Noahs Ark. We also discussed traces of
Gods wisdom in the animals we looked at, the Ice Age and in the season of Winter.
Science: We studied ice and damage it can do as it expands. We watched a youtube
video about ice breaking pipes then we froze water in a glass jar with a screw lid.
When it froze, the ice pushed the lid up, bent the lid and broke the glass. We also
froze some plastic animals in ice and watched them melt during the day.

We also discussed how water expands inside the popcorn kernel and causes it to
pop open.
In Art: Miss Angenent introduced painting using various shades of color and the
children painted large murals on the tabletops.
In Music, Drama and Dance: Miss Angenent continues with Musical Lunches and
dance parties. We talked about how music makes us feel and how different music
makes us feel different emotions.
In Mathematics: We continued the 100 days of school.adding fish to our
fishbowl and straws to our collection. We counted by 1,2,5, and 10. We continued
using dot plates to quickly identify and count numbers 1 -10. We finished working
on forming numbers 0 to 10. Number poems were sent home. These poems have
helped the children immensely - not only to form the letters but to help some of us
recognize them. We have repeatedly watched THE NUMERAL SONG on youtube.
You will find your child has it pretty much memorized should you play it.
In Personal and Social Development: We had to have a classroom FISHBOWL
meeting. In a fishbowl discussion, only one person is allowed to talk at a time. We
used this to solve several incidences that occurred out on the yard. They all boiled
down to taking responsibility for our own behavior and not blaming it on a friend,
and to being kind.both being good traits of a Bucket Filler!
In Inquiry/Directed Play: We had 2 Roots of Empathy visits. Last week, Mrs.
Krug discussed with the children what would be needed in a diaper bag. This week,
we actually got to see what was in Alicias diaper bag. Then Mrs. Krug discussed
with the children the growth we had seen in Alicia since the last time she visited.
Miss Angenent worked with the children on retelling stories, the letter X and
introduced a listening centre activity. Other activities included fine motor and
vocabulary development.

** For those of you who are looking ahead, for Valentines Day, each child is
invited to bring cards for ALL 28 classmates. In the TO: section, please
write or have your child write (depending on your child!) TO: MY FRIEND.
Please, please, please do not put individual names on each card as it makes
handing them out difficult and feelings are more easily hurt!
