Students will continue to work on developing as a writer through the use of grammar lessons and vocabulary. There may be reading assigned to complete outside of class, as well as homework and other written assignments. Students will be notified in advance as to when technology will be used to turn in assignments or when materials are online that need to be accessed outside of classroom time.

Overview:

Throughoutthedurationofthiscourse,studentswillbereadingshortstories,poetry,andnonfiction.
Studentswillreadmajorpiecesofliterature,whichincludes
JuliusCaesar
andanovelbyJohnSteinbeck.

Studentswillcontinuetoworkonanddeveloptheirskillsinreadingandanalyzingliterature,usinghigher
orderthinkingskillstorespondtotext,andthewritingprocess.Throughoutthesemester,eachstudentwillcontinue
toworkondevelopingasawriterthroughtheuseofgrammarlessonsandvocabulary.Weeklyquizzesaretobe
expected.Studentswillknowinadvancewhenquizzeswillbetaken.

Studentswillberequiredtohaveanindependentreadingnovelwiththeminclass.Thisnovelmustbewith
youatalltimeswhenyoucometoclass.Studentswillbeexpectedtoreadafterquizzesandtestsaretaken,aswell
asondayswhenfreereadingisassignedtotheclass.Readingfromthisnovelonassigneddays/timeswillbepartof
theparticipationpointsreceivedinthisclass.

Theremaybereadingassignedtocompleteoutsideofclass,aswellashomeworkandotherwritten
assignments.Classdiscussionswillbeavitalpartofyourlearning,thereforeitisimportanttocometoeachclass
preparedtolistenandparticipate.Studentswillbegivenquizzesoverreadingmaterialsthatareassignedto
completeoutsideoftheclassroom.StudentswillbeusingtechnologythroughtheuseofGoogleDrivetocomplete
somehomeworkassignments.Studentswillbenotifiedinadvanceastowhentechnologywillbeusedasameansof
turninginassignmentsorwhenmaterialsareonlinethatneedtobeaccessedoutsideofclassroomtime.

TechnologyUsage:

Studentswillsubmitsomehomeworkassignmentsandallmajorwrittenprojectstotheteacherbyusingtheir
Googleaccount.Studentsareresponsibleforknowingandrememberingtheloginpasswordandmanagingthat
information.Allassignmentsandwrittenprojectsmustbeturnedinfollowingthestepslaidoutbytheteacherin
ordertoearnfullcredit.Also,studentsmustadheretotheIKMManningCSDcomputerandInternetusepolicy.Any
andallviolationswillbetakendirectlytothetechnologycoordinatorandprincipal.

Withthe1:1initiativeintroducedduringthe20152016academicschoolyear,computerswillbeusedona
consistentbasisinclass.Computerlidswillbeclosedwhenthebellringsandwillonlybeopenedifinstructedbythe
teacher.Ifastudentisinviolationoftheteachersrequestsregardingtechnology,thecomputermaybekeptbythe
teacherfortheremainderoftheclassperiod.

Plagiarism:

Plagiarismisthepracticeoftakingsomeoneelsesworkorideasandpassingthemoffasonesown.Ifany
oftheworkonyourpaperisnotyourownandyouhavefailedtomakethiscleartoyourteacher,thenyouare
deliberatelydefraudingyourteacher,andyouareguiltyofplagiarism.Studentswhoplagiarizewillautomatically
receivea0ontheplagiarizedworkwithnoopportunitytoredotheworkassigned.

Consequences:
1.

Anystudentcaughtcheatingorplagiarizingonschoolworkwillreceiveafailingscoreandwillhaveno
opportunitytosubmitanotherpaper.
2.

Anystudentcooperatinginasituationinvolvingcheatingorplagiarismissubjecttothesameconsequences.
3.

Parents/guardianswillbenotifiedeitherbyaletter,email,telephonecallorwithnotesplacedontheonlinegrade
book.
4.

Awrittenaccountoftheincidentmaybereportedtotheprincipalandwillbedocumentedinthestudents
disciplinaryrecord.

TypedWork:

Allpapersmustbesubmittedtotheteacherfollowingthepropertypedformat.Anexpectationssheetwillbe
availabletoeachstudentonwhatrequirementsmustbemetwithtypedwork.Thisexpectationsheetcanbefound
ontheteachersschoolwebsite.

Whensubmittingawritingassignment,therubricMUSTbehandedintotheteacheroragradewillnotbe
awardedforthework.Notypedworkwillbegradediftherubricisnothandedin.

Grading:
Quartergradeswillnolongerbeused,thereforeyoursemestergradeswillaccountfor80%ofyourgrade..The
semestertestwillcountas20%ofyourgrade.Thegradingscaleforthisclasswillbetheuniversalgradingscalefor
IKMManningHighSchool.

LateWork:
AllassignmentsaredueatthebeginningofclassthedaytheyaredueOR,ifsubmittedelectronically,atthe
cutofftimeestablishedbytheteacher.Failuretohandinassignmentsatthetimetheyareduewillresultinalossof
50percentofthetotalpointsoftheassignment.Alllateworkisduewithintwodays.Aftertwodays,nopointswillbe
awarded.
Allassignmentsnothandedinbytheendofthesemesterwillresultinanincompletegradeandyouwill
havethreedaystocompletetheworkorriskfailureoftheclassforthequarterorsemester.

AbsentWork:

Ifabsentfromschool,assignmentsgivenpriortoyourabsencearedueimmediately.Youwillhavetwo
daystomakeupanymissingassignmentsgivenduringyourabsence.Failuretomakeupwork,ormake
arrangementswiththeteachertoturninwork,aftertwodayswillresultinalossof50percentofthetotalpointsofthe
assignment.

Longrangeassignmentsmustbecompletedwhenyoureturntoschoolfromyourabsence.Failuretodoso

ExtraCredit:
Extracreditwillbeavailableatthediscretionoftheteacher.Donotaskforextracredititwillnotbegiven
onanindividualbasis.Extracreditwillnotbeeasytoearninthisclass.Preparetodoyourbestworkonall
