Properties of Water

Water is a polar molecule made of two hydrogen atoms and one oxygen atom. The slightly negatively charged oxygen end is attracted to the slightly positively charged hydrogen ends of other water molecules, causing water molecules to stick together. This cohesive property allows water to have high surface tension and be a universal solvent that can dissolve many other substances. Water also sticks to other polar substances through adhesive forces. These properties allow water to be essential for life and play a key role in processes like capillary action and suspension.

PROPERTIES OF WATER

1
Structure of Water
 H2O = 2 atoms of
Hydrogen & 1 atom of
Oxygen
 The Oxygen end is
slightly negatively
charged
 The Hydrogen end is
slightly positively
charged

2
1. Polar Molecule
 Electrically
charged molecule
*water (i.e. Like
the attraction of
two bar
magnets)

3
Why do water
molecules stick
together?

4
2. Cohesion
 Positive and negative ends of water molecules
attract each other causing them to stick.

5
Why do water molecules
stick to other substances?

6
3. Adhesion
 Positive and negative ends of water molecules
attract to the charged parts of other substances.

7
4. Surface Tension
 The tightness across the surface of water
caused by polar molecules pulling on each
other (cohesion)
**Causes water to form droplets!

8
5. Capillary Action
 Water molecules stick to the sides of a tube
**This property of water allows plant stems
and roots to absorb & pull water out of the soil

9
6. Universal Solvent
 Ability to dissolve many substances because of
it’s polarity.
 Solution = a mixture that forms when one substance
dissolves in another
 Solvent = substance that does the dissolving

10
Phases of Water
 Solid
 Ice
 Liquid
 Water
 Gas
 Water vapor

11
8. Suspension
 The ability of water to carry billions of small
solid particles as it flows.
**i.e. Bottom of the Mississippi is like chocolate
pudding

12
9. Why Ice Floats???
 Water expands when
it freezes.
* When water cools
below 4o C, molecules
arrange in a grid like
crystal structure.
* These molecules
take up more space
than liquid water
making ice less dense!

13
10. Specific Heat
 The amount of heat needed to increase the
temperature of a certain amount by 1o C.
*Water has a very high specific heat compared to other
substances
