Water Cycle

The water cycle is a continuous, sun-driven process by which water moves through the environment. It involves evaporation of water from surfaces into the atmosphere, condensation of water vapor into clouds, precipitation of water from clouds back to the surface in forms like rain or snow, melting of snow or ice, and runoff of liquid water from land to rivers and ultimately oceans, from which the cycle begins again through evaporation. For the water cycle to remain in balance, the amount of water evaporating must equal the amount of precipitation.

EVAPORATION:
Changing from
A liquid to a gas

CONDENSATIO
N:
Gas to a liquid

Loses energy

RESPIRATION:
Gas to a gas OR
Gas to a liquid

Loses energy

8
Process that occur in the
water cycle
• PRECIPITATION
– Form of water that
falls from the sky to
the earth

– Solid or liquid

9
Run off

10
Run off
• Water that runs over the surface of the
ground.
– Depends on
• Rate of precipitation
• Soil saturation
• Gradient of the land

11
Balance
• In order for the water cycle to stay in
balance, the amount of evaporation
must be equal to the amount of
precipitation

• In coming = out going

12
FYI
• 1. Leaves from a large Birch tree can
give off 260 liters of water a day!!
– That is enough to fill 9 kitchen sinks!

13
FYI
2. The larger the reservoir (holding place)
the longer a water molecule is stuck
there:
Example
A water molecule in the atmosphere only
stays there 9 days, while a molecule of
water in the ocean can be there up to
3,000 years!!!
