ME 649 Assignment 1

This document summarizes an assignment involving analysis of thermocouple circuit data. The key points are: 1) A thermocouple circuit forms a voltage from the temperature difference between a measuring junction and reference junction. For measurement, the variables that need controlling are the reference junction temperature and alloy materials which determine the voltage-temperature relationship. 2) A calibration curve is plotted of output voltage (Y) vs. input temperature (X) using the given data. The static sensitivity (K) at each X is estimated and then plotted against X to examine how sensitivity changes with input magnitude. 3) Three clocks are compared to a time standard and must be arranged in order of estimated accuracy based on the

Assignment 1
Date of Submission: 15th January, 2016
1. A simple thermocouple circuit is formed using two wires of different alloy: one end of the wires
is twisted together to form the measuring junction, while the other ends are connected to a
voltmeter and form the reference junction. A voltage is set up by the difference in temperature
between the two junctions. For a given pair of alloy material and reference junction temperature,
the temperature of the measuring junction is inferred from the measured voltage difference. For a
measurement, what variables need to be controlled? What are the dependent and independent
variables?

2. For the calibration data given, plot the calibration curve using suitable axes. Estimate the static
sensitivity of the system at each X. Then plot K against X. Comment on the behavior of the static
sensitivity with static input magnitude for this system.
