LCD Presentaion

LCD (liquid crystal display) is a common display technology that is thinner and uses less power than older cathode ray tube (CRT) displays. LCDs work by manipulating liquid crystals and do not emit their own light. They were first developed in the late 1880s but did not see widespread use until the 1970s with the invention of active-matrix LCD, which led to clearer displays. Today, LCDs are widely used in devices like computers, phones, TVs, and more due to their advantages over other technologies. Manufacturers are also combining LCDs with LED backlights to improve brightness.

Liquid Crystal Display

(LCD)
By: Gurveer Gill

What is an LCD
LCD (liquid crystal display) is the technology used for displays in

computers. Like light-emitting diode (LED) and gas-plasma

technologies, LCDs allow displays to be much thinner than cathode
ray tube (CRT) technology.

Overview

LCDs are very common because they offer more advantages then

other display technologies, they are thinner, lighter and draw less
power then cathode ray tubes (CRTs).
LCDs does not directly emit light to create visualizations

History

In 1888, Friedrich Reinitzer (18581927) discovered the liquid crystalline nature of cholesterol extracted from carrots (that is, two melting points and generation of colors) and
published his findings at a meeting of the Vienna Chemical Society on May 3, 1888.

In 1936, the Marconi Wireless Telegraph company

patented the first practical application of the technology,
"The Liquid Crystal Light Valve".

In 1972, the first active-matrix liquid-crystal display panel was produced in the United States by T Peter Brody's team at Westinghouse, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
In the fourth quarter of 2007, LCD televisions surpassed CRTs in worldwide sales for the first time.
[23] LCD TVs were projected to account 50% of the 200 million TVs to be shipped globally in 2008, according to Display Bank.[24]
In October 2011, Toshiba announced 2560 1600 pixels on a 6.1-inch (155 mm) LCD panel, suitable for use in a tablet computer,[25] especially for Chinese character display.

A Structure of a LCD
Here is what the LCD consisits of:

TFT: thin-film transistor, denoting a technology used to

make flat color display screens, usually for high-end
portable computers.

Polarizer: cause (something) to acquire polarity

Connections to a LCD in a Computer

Monochrome is the connection in the computer that gives color to the

display for an LCD, if there was no Monochrome the LCD images will
come up black/ gray and white, instead of full coloured.

Products made with LCDs

Touch screen Phones
Computers
T.V
Pocket Calculator
These are just some examples of where LCDs are used.

How they make LCDs

LCDs are quite hard to make, it can take some time to make a small LCD.
Bigger LCDs, such as LCDs made in Computer screens and T.V's, Take a very long time and take
machines to make it.
The supplies needed are obtainable, but can cost a lot of money and everyting has to be ordered
online.

Features and Changes being added to LCD

Products
LCDs are acutually being used with LEDs with such things as computers,

laptops, and T.V's. The thing that major companies, such as LG or

Samsung, are doing now are adding LEDs to LCD T.V's as a light source.

Light output (brightness)

Winner: LED

Loser: Plasma

Runner-Up: LCD
