Create Your Own Culture Childrens Book

We will begin working on these books in class. January 13, 14, and 15 you will have class time to work in
groups. The project is due in class Tuesday, January 19.
You should choose your group wisely. 2-4 people per group and no individual projects.
I need the group list before you leave today.
The end product of this assignment will be in the form of a childrens book. You will need to include all of the
information below as well as illustrations in the form of downloaded images, your own drawings or
photographs, or pictures cut out from magazines. The information must be TYPED, double space, 12point+
font or very neatly written by hand. Your book must be bound in some way to ensure that no pages can fall out.
Make it colorful and fun it is a childrens book. DO NOT DUPLICATE AN ALREADY EXISTING
CULTURE.
People: what kinds of people exist in the society; what is their basic nature?
Family: what is the basic family structure?
Education: how will your young people learn the skills they need?
Folkways and Mores: what unwritten rules of behavior are present? What are the customs and traditions?
Laws: what are the serious violations? What are the punishments?
Religion(s) and holidays: describe the religious structure, if any, and main holidays observed in your culture.
Political System: what type of government has been established?
Economic System: does the culture barter, produce manufactured goods, provide services? What will be your
currency and how will good and services be exchanged?
Language: do all of the people speak the same language? If not is one dominant?
Science and Technology: how will your culture improve the quality of life of its citizens? What are some
inventions?
Sports: will you have formal recreational sports? What will they be like?
Arts, literature, and music: how do these reflect and express the culture? How will you entertain yourselves?
You will receive a Research Grade each day we are working in class. You will be required to show me
your progress each day to receive your grade.
I will take 5 points off each time you are caught not on task.
You will also receive a Project Grade and a Presentation Grade for your completed book.
