Workplace

Work Environment
Personal trainers and instructors work in health clubs, fitness or recreation centres, gyms,
country clubs, hospitals, universities, resorts, and clients' homes. Some personal trainers
and instructors also work in offices, where they organize and direct health and fitness
programs for employees.

Main Duties

Evaluate athletes' readiness to play and provide participation clearances when

necessary and warranted.
Perform general administrative tasks, such as keeping records or writing reports.
Assess and report the progress of recovering athletes to coaches or physicians.

Conduct an initial assessment of an athlete's injury or illness to provide emergency or

continued care and to determine whether they should be referred to physicians for
definitive diagnosis and treatment.
Plan or implement comprehensive athletic injury or illness prevention programs.
Advise athletes on the proper use of equipment.
Accompany injured athletes to hospitals.
Collaborate with physicians to develop and implement comprehensive rehabilitation
programs for athletic injuries.
Recommend special diets to improve athletes' health, increase their stamina or alter
their weight.
Apply protective or injury preventive devices, such as tape, bandages or braces, to
body parts such as ankles, fingers or wrists.

Important Skills

Customer-service skills. Many personal trainers and instructors must sell their
services, motivating clients to hire them as personal trainers or to sign up for the
classes they lead. Personal trainers and instructors must therefore be polite, friendly,
and encouraging to maintain relationships with their clients.
Listening skills. Personal trainers must be able to listen carefully to what clients tell
them to determine the client's fitness levels and desired fitness goals.
Motivational skills. Getting fit and staying fit takes a lot of work for many clients. To
keep clients coming back for more classes or to continue personal training, fitness
trainers and instructors must keep their clients motivated.
Physical fitness. Personal trainers need to be physically fit because their job requires a
considerable amount of exercise.
Problem-solving skills. Personal trainers must evaluate each clients level of fitness
and create an appropriate fitness plan to meet the clients individual needs.
Speaking skills. Personal trainers must be able to communicate well because they
need to be able to explain exercises and movements to clients, as well as motivate

them verbally during exercises.
