Helical Drilling

Helical drilling uses pulsed laser radiation to remove small amounts of material from a workpiece with each pulse. The laser beam spins in a helical path relative to the workpiece to drill small holes with diameters matching the laser beam width. Multiple revolutions are needed to fully perforate the material. Varying the angle of incidence and impact point allows changing the hole geometry. Helical drilling provides the most precise laser drilling possible with high-quality, round holes and reduced recast layers and surface roughness.

Helical Drilling

Pulsed radiation is used in nano-pico seconds range

Only a very small volume of material is removed by each pulse

Relative movement takes place between the work-piece and laser beam

The spin of the laser beam on the helical path

The rotation of the laser beam in itself(proper rotation)

Proper rotation
To compensate for a non-circular beam profile

Makes it possible to produce small drill holes with a diameter in the

range of the beam cross-section

Full perforation only can obtain after multiple revolution

Changing the geometry of the drill hole can be achieved by changing the
angle of incidence and the work-piece and the point of Impact

Main Characteristics
Helical drilling provides the greatest precision of all currently known laser
drilling techniques
Helical drilling makes it possible to produce very large and deep highquality holes.
The roundness of the drill hole
The sharpness of the edge at the entrance and exit of the drill hole
Decreased surface roughness

Thinner recast layer of solidified melt

The wall of the drill hole is more homogeneous
