Equipment Used: None Used
Targeted NASPE Standard(s): 1,4
Specific Objective: Students will be able to strengthen their scientific
knowledge through the exploration of a specific animal, and give at
least one reason as to why penguins huddle together with accuracy.
Concomitant Objective: Students will stay physically active through the
integration of science concepts in an authentic activity in a large group
activity.

Warm Up: Ask students to stand up and gently
push their chairs in. We will get ready for our
activity by doing a 5-second quad stretch on
each leg

Set Induction: How many of you have ever
seen the movie Happy Feet? Well, what kind of
animals are in that movie? Where do they live?
(Cold, Antarctica, South Pole all acceptable
answers)
Learnable Piece: Well, where some penguins
live, the temperature can go all the way down to
-127* Fahrenheit. Today we will learn how
penguins stay warm in the brutal cold where they
live. Penguins work together to keep each other
warm, by huddling together.
Presentation of New Material/Directions:
-Penguins use their own body heat to warm their
friends up, by huddling together in the winter.
-They do so by making a large formation, where
the penguins in the middle will get the body heat
from the other penguins!
-Today, we will be working together to help keep
each other warm during the brutal cold!
-Once I have finished giving instructions, I will
number you off, and you will move to a new area
of the classroom.
-One student will stand in the middle, and be the
very cold penguin.
-The cold penguin will stand in the center, and
shiver DEMONSTRATE
-In order to show how body heat can warm the
penguin in the middle, the penguins on the
outside will run in place for ten seconds at a
time DEMONSTRATE
-Then a new penguin will move into the center, to
simulate all of the penguins being warmed!
-Continue the warming circle until every penguin
is no longer cold!
-All of the penguins need to be aware of their
own personal space.
-Although penguins do get very close, we need to
make sure we respect each others space.
-Keep your eyes up, and pay attention to what is
happening in the activity so that all of the
penguins can get their turn!

Transition:
-Number Students off by 4s
-Group 1 to the front left corner
-Group 2 to the front right corner
-Group 3 to the back left corner
-Group 4 to the back right corner
Activity: Once students are in their respective
corners, each student will receive a turn in the
center of the circle, where they will receive the
warmth of the other penguins.
Possible Modifications: If students finish the
activity faster than anticipated, we will return to
our desks and begin the review.
Lesson Review:
-Can anybody tell me where the penguins live,
and what the weather is like?
-How do the penguins work together in the brutal
cold?
