ECE532 Sheet 2

1. The document contains 10 problems about calculating fiber optic properties such as numerical aperture, acceptance angle, relative refractive index, number of modes, cutoff wavelength, and core radius for single mode fibers. Characteristics given include core and cladding refractive indices, diameters, wavelengths, and relative refractive indices. Calculations require using the formulas for numerical aperture, acceptance angle, and cutoff wavelength.

Fiber Optics
Sheet 2
1- A step index fiber has ncore=1.44 and nclad=1.4. Find (a) N.A.
(b) Relative refractive index and (c) the acceptance angle.
2- A fiber has the following characteristics: n1=1.35(core index) and
relative refractive index=2%. Find the N.A. and the acceptance
angle.
3- An optical fiber is being designed. It must have an acceptance
angle of 75%. Its cladding index is 1.38. Find its core index.
4- A step index fiber has an acceptance angle in of 27.47 degrees
and the relative refractive index is 0.014. Find the numerical
aperture and the critical angle at the core-cladding interface for
the fiber.
5- Calculate the number of modes for the step index optical fiber at
wavelength=820 nm having the following characteristics
n1=1.41, n2=1.4 and core diameter=50um.
6- Calculate the number of allowed modes in a multimode step
index fiber that has a core of refractive index of 1.468 and
diameter 100um, and a cladding of refractive index of 1.447 if
the source wavelength is 850nm.
7- What would be the core radius of a single mode optical fiber that
has a core of n1=1.468, cladding of n2=1.447 and is to be used
with a source wavelength of 1.3um.
8- Calculate the cut-off wavelength for single mode operation for a
fiber that has a core with diameter of 7um, a refractive index of
1.458, and a cladding of refractive index of 1.452. What is the Vnumber?
9- A step index fiber has a core diameter of 100um and a refractive
index of 1.480. The cladding has a refractive index of 1.460.
Calculate the numerical aperture of the fiber, acceptance angle
from air, and the number of modes sustained when the source
wavelength is 850nm.
10-A typical single mode optical fiber has a core of diameter 8um
and a refractive index of 1.46. The normalized index difference is
0.3%. The cladding diameter is 125um. Calculate the numerical
